Hi Folks,

We are going to start doing some minor welding repairs on the Duster. Need to know the thickness of the flooring and body panel material in order to use correct MIG welder settings. Thanks in advance.

20 gauge.

Yup. Settings depends on butt weld or lap. Butt weld is heat down wire speed up, lap is heat up wire speed down. You've gotta play with it. Use a copper heat sink on the back, and it helps distortion to spray air over it after you've done your cute little spot weld. There will always be a little distortion, away from you.

Don't beat it to death trying to make it perfect. Tap it gently, it only moves so much, ask me how I know....

Here is a nice site explaining the art of the mig:

And my personal favorite panel fab thread:

Enjoy!

daliant & PoisonDart74 Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

PoisonDart74 - Great Links! ...I've been practicing on scrap metal since my wife gave me the MIG welder on Christmas and feeling just about comfortable enough to work on a few small patches on the trunk floor. I suspect I'll end up finding all kinds of stuff to fix/fabricate as I get more confidence. (I am having a blast!)

Be well guys,
Pat

No problem, enjoy it! I am also having more fun then I should be having. Some folks might think I'm peculiar. :D
