I am at the point of either modifying my throttle bracket or finding a new cable.

With the correct linkagae adapter on the carb and correct throttle bracket the cable sleve where it is clamped is so far back towards the firewall I worry it will not stay held in one day.

Is their a shorter cable available for the a-bodies or is this a common issue?

How? The adapter only bolts on in a specific place and there isn't enough meat on the adapter to drill a new hole for the stud.

I'll assume you bought an Edelbrock carb, put the linkage stud in the large hole rather than the 1/4" one. This move it forward about 1/2".
