I'm rebuilding my 225 and when I pulled the timing chain cover I noticed just over a half inch of play in the chain (slop). Is that acceptable? Thanks

There is some gaping from chain stretch, is it too much,I don't know.

I wouldn't run it, it's just going to get worse.
If you're "rebuilding" the engine, I can't conceive of not replacing the timing chain.

Looks like it already had an upgrade replacement timing set on it at one time. Step it up a notch more and get a true roller for it. And while your in there. A Mother Thumper Cam and a header.

I bought a 225 not long ago with a hole in the timing chain cover because the sloppy chain wore through it.
