Timing cover question

Is there a difference in timing covers between early LA engines with the cast iron water pump, and later LA engines with the aluminum water pump?

I believe its just which side of the cover the timing marks are.

So a cast iron water pump will mount properly to the later timing cover then?

Be careful, I think there is a thread in the smallblock section outlining all the different timing covers and the differences. Search for it. I know it's in there and it's informative.

The water pump inlet will block the timing mark. You`ll need to use the proper pump and radiator to orient the water inlets.

Yeah, my water pump inlet blocks the timimg mark. It's a pain to time it. Trial and error.
