Upon replacing all freeze plugs on the 340 motor, i've come across the motor with no timing tab on it. The motor is a 68' 340 and I've come as close to have it run, but it boggs on high RPM(4k-5krpm). Anyone know where I'm suppose to mount the timing tab and the correct timing setting? Thanks in advance.
It does have a mopar performance electronic ignition. No points type distributor.

The early 68's had a timing tab that mounted to the bottom 2 water pump bolts and the scale was on the passenger side.

As for timing, I would start out between 5 and 10 degrees BTDC, then go from there.

You could bring the piston up to TDC and mark your balancer and a point on the block to get yourself close. Then either look for one of the tabs or install timing tape on the balancer, or an adjustable timing light. But, for any of these to work you will need to mark TDC on the block, for a fixed reference point.

spin the engine by hand with #1 spark plug out with your pinky finger inserted in it when it blows your finger out of the hole your near tdc firing. now you would have to use a dial indicator to bring it to tdc and mark it on the cover and make sure it lines up with the damper, if it doesnt mark the damper also.. your almost there if its bogging on the upper end ,give it a lil more advance til ya hear detonation then back off it a lil. time to find a new timing tab or cover.if ya got vacuum advance just plug it and set total at 35 degrees and try it out.if ya have vacuum advance its a different procedure but if ya dont need it just keep it plugged or ask for proper procedure
