Should the original tire pressure recommendation stickers still be followed with modern tires?

Probably not with radials. I would fill tires a check the contact patch. Add or subtract psi until tread pattern contacts the ground evenly across.

Follow the tire manufacturers recommended psi.
All tires have the 'max psi cold' stamped on the side wall (which stands to reason, psi will increase when tires naturally warm up after driving) but that fluctuation is factored in by the tire manufacturer.
