Big block help please. I am fixing a leak on my 440 oil pump. I have pulled it apart and have the o rings to go back in it. Once together, should I prime it before starting since so much oil ran out when I pulled it apart? Or just put motor honey on the gear and shaft and crank it for a while before starting? If I need to prime it....how do you do it? Thanks for any help.

I do't have a lot of big block experience, but I have a ton of engine building experience in general. I say prime it. simple enough to do. just remove the distributor and spin the oil pump drive up with a cordless drill until you know the fliter is full. I think it would prime itself if you just fired it up, but why take chances? Know what I mean, Vern?

Was. You know he's dead now. he died from a malignant brain tumor. That was really sad. He sure made a lot of people laugh. He was a good Christian man, too.

I heard that and was bummed. Ernest Saves Christmas is my favorite. (sorry to hijack dusty)

First of all you need that hex long shaft that will fit in a drill and in the oil pump..pull the distributor and get the distributor gear out...I take a metal coat hanger and bend a loop in it...take a large screw driver and turn the gear clockwise and it will start to rise out of the cam shaft...hook it with the coat hanger and put it out...stick the hex shaft in a drill and into the oil pump...spin the drill in reverse for 30 seconds and you should hear the drill load up and change sound...I also rotate the crank at the same time as oiling if it is a new engine build...
