todays posts vs new posts

What is the difference between todays posts and new posts?
It may sound like a stupid question but would a new post be the same as todays post?

New posts are new from the last time you were logged in & visited. Today's posts are posts of that day , I'm guessing midnight to midnight for the day's time frame. Lawrence
