Too Much Play In Steering Wheel

On My 65 Valiant -- There's considerable play (steering wheel turns - wheels don't turn) in the steering wheel. - When I tighten the adjustment, and lock the nut, on top of the steering box, the extra play goes away. -- BUT -- After driving the car for a few days, the play returns. - I have done this a few times. Each time the adjuster rotates more in a clockwise direction, and the play goes away. -- Will I eventually correct the problem - OR - Is there a point of no return ?

See where the play is at before adjusting the box. It could be in the coupler or lower box bearing

-- Apparently, at least, most of the play is in the box, because it goes away when I tighten the adjuster.
