I am planning to use a A518 behind my 340/395. The trans is out of a 94 Ram 5.9 magnum I got off of a member here. The engine is going to be internal balanced and I would like a neutral balance on the torque converter. Is there any issue with just removing the external balance weight in the converter for the 5.9? Do I need to find somewhere to balance the converter after that or should it be at neutral without the weight?

Remove the weight and then have the converter balanced with the rest.

Can a trans shop usually do that? My engine shop is getting up to speed with crank balancing since they are having to bring that in house due to all the balancing companies around here closing or retiring. He wasn't sure he could do the converter.

Another question to be answered is ... will a stock converter work well with your hot rodded 395 ?

Magnums are weighted ON THE FLEX plate, not the converter. I'd be careful. There may be a small balance weight on the converter.......to neutral balance the converter. There should not, on a magnum, be a weight for external balance of the engine. If you are using the Magnum flex plate, yes, there should be weight(s) there to remove

Early 5.9 Magnums WERE weighted on the converter itself and ran a neutral flex plate. Somewhere around 95 the weight was moved to the flex plate and then the converter was neutral.

The early weight on the converter was a large triangle-ish shape. Be careful trying to remove weights from a converter so as not to rip a hole in the converter iteself.

I think on a 5.9 magnum that the flexplate is balanced for the engine and the converter is neutral balanced. If this is true, then the converter should be fine as is. Mopar Automatic Transmission Details - Magnum engine swap |
Only '96 and up. 95-down still have the weight on the converter.
I swapped from a 360 to a 318 years ago (external balance to internal balance) and when I first got it running it had a helluva vibration. Once I found out why I took a Dremel and carefully cut the welds on the weight, almost all the way thru (I didn't want to put a hole in the converter face) them a couple of blows with a hammer and chisel and it was off, problem solved
