I have had my open bed trailer since '96 and it has been a work horse. It was getting a little rundown so I decided to keep it and show it a little love this past year. I replaced the wood bed, the jack, all the wiring/connectors/chains, the breakaway box/cable/battery, tires and added a new diamond plate storage box with a Warn winch inside. Also, I am just about to sand it and spray it but need to start thinking about puting it away for a few months since I won't be using it.

My question (finally) is: Do you folks have any suggestions for storing it outside besides throwing tarps over it? Actually, I don't mind the tarp idea but am trying to think of some way of constructing a lightweight and easily removable frame (perhaps using the stake pockets) so that the water runs off and doesn't collect anywhere on any part of the trailer.

If anyone has any creative solutions/thoughts, I would appreciate hearing them.

Do you live where snow is a concern? If so, that would dictate how strong a structure you should build. You could build a frame out of galvanized electrical conduit and throw a tarp over it. It would be very easy to just pop the framing out of the pockets when you want to use the trailer. The height of the peak could be only as high as needed for you to crawl inside for maintenance.

We built a similar structure for my brother's boat some 25 years ago. It held up well under snow loading. Most of the plastic tarps available today are cheaply made; they do not hold up for long. Get yourself a better-made tarp that will repel moisture.

How about one of those portable garages ?? Maybe try looking in your local newspaper classifieds? Around here we have what they call The Bargain News. I've seen people sell them really cheap, and once I saw one advertised FREE if you just went and got it.. Of course someone beat me to it... They're pretty easy to put up, and they are strong, cause I've seen a ton of them here in New England..

I got a diamond plate top on my open trailer. I don't cover
it at all. Put it in the back corner of the yard. Use the jack
to lift the front end up alot to let the water run off.
When it come to the snow. I go out and shovel it off when it
get's to deep. It's under some trees. It gets some pine needles
on it at times, but I just keep it cleaned off.
