I'm installing a TransGo TF-2 shift kit for a fellow A-body in his 904 transmission. I installed a couple of kits a few years back and the transmissions shifted great. If I remember it took a couple hours, I like to take my time and keep every thing clean and neat. Is there any tricks or other things I should know about installing this kit? Thanks for all the help.

install a pan with a drain plug! Worst thing I know is working under an A/T with a constant drip. Also get a sector shaft seal and install it while you have the VB out, you'll be glad you did it pro-actively.

The only thing extra I do is completely disassemble the valve body and clean all parts good then put a light coat of ATF on the valves when re-installing them. Sludge gets built up in the channels over the yrs and while you have it apart it's a good time to give it a good cleaning. As for the shift kit install, just follow the directions.

Just found some notes I made from when I did the last kit. I did not grind down the TV and I did not do the shift command modification, these were suggestions from a buddy who builds transmissions. It is good to take notes for future reference! Anybody else not do these mods when installing this kit?

Me. I have found grinding down the TV valve as much as they say often times eliminates passing gear, or at least restricts it to only having P gear at low speeds. I just adjust the throttle pressure linkage so it shifts and downshifts at the right speeds. I have never done the "shift command" mod either because I see no reason to want to downshift to 1st gear at high speeds and from what I gather from the instructions that's all it does.

yep, same here...did three up til now, never used the shift command feature. Everything´s fine!

I've done a lot of TF-2s. Never fitted the shift command feature. I would strongly suggest a billet aluminium Low/Reverse servo piston spring retainer when a TF-2 is fitted. The spring has a habit of "popping" the sheet metal retainer with the increased internal pressure. Also as Tracy mentioned don't grind the throttle valve down as far as in the instructions. I always remove all the valves so I end up with a bare VB, just to be sure I have removed all of the swarf from drilling & filing. The smallest of shavings can play havoc with a valve body.

..............I have installed more TF-2 kits and TF-3s than I can recall, and on every one I have ground down the tp valve and done the shift command feature.....there is nothing more annoying than not being able to take advantage of ur engines power curve........kim......
