transmission id 1967 prior vs 1967 & later

how do you tell the difference between an early 1966- prior versus & 1967 & later style, these are 904 automatics..

one is fine spline & one is coarse on the smaller input shaft.

both are slant tranny's thanks Lawrence

is there a quick visual way with out looking up the pan id numbers? thanks Lawrence

Maybe someone that knows 904's better than me will know something else. The only external difference I know of is the input shaft, which you mentioned. The early/coarse spline is 18 splines while the newer fine spline is 27 spline.
