Transmission Inspection Cover

Anybody know if the inspection cover on a 1973 Dodge Dart Sport
340 is supposed to be painted and if so what color? I just got a replacement and plan to install this weekend and wanted to find
out so I can get it ready before I pull the starter.

The inspection cover should be unpainted galvanized steel.

Mine was black and I have seen many others that are also black. From junkyard cars to nice show cars. I honestly dont know what color it is suppose to be, only relaying what I have seen.

The originals that I have seen were bare, unpainted galvanized steel, as stated above. I have painted them though...

I hope you don't have to, but if you have headers you may have to loosen them to get the inspection cover to clear when installing it.
