Hello everyone, hopefully I can get some info here:, I've got a 2001 Dodge ram 1500 2wd, 3.9L, I'm swapping tail shafts on the transmission I'm not sure if the one in the truck is a 46re or a 42re but I'm trying to put the tail shaft into a A500 the bolt pattern is the same I can get it down to about a 1/2in., before I can bolt it dn it stops can get it to go any further.is it a truck to getting it on? Serious need of help my only vehicle ....thank you!!!...

Post photos. Seeing the pan will tell you which one you have.

Welcome… most likely and 42re.
There is a sticker under the hood or in the glove box that details the driveline options .

Yes but more fab work .
You will need to have the driveshaft shortened with either.

I think it is a 42re the problem I'm having is I'm changing the tail shaft from the 42re onto A500 trans the bolt pattern is the same and when I get it pushed almost all the way dn it stops is their a trick on doing it thanks

The 42re is an A500 transmission. Just 2 different names . Why are you swapping them?

Tail shaft housing will swap between these unless one is an "RH" and the other is "RE"
There are 2 tubes coming out of the older RH that the RE doesn't have. The RE may have plugs in the back of the front case where those lines "for the governor) would go. And no it's not just pulling those plugs of there to make it work. The valve bodies are different between the 2 versions.

The one that's in the truck has a one tube and I believe it's for shifting the one that's in the truck when I take off I have to rev the engine for it to go into second and the same to go into 3rd it won't go into 4th. I've changed the filter, fluid, solonids, governor, still doing the same talked to a mechanic he said said swap out tail shaft.went out found the cheapest transmission I could find (used) it's a A500 trans
