While removing undercoat from a 72 Swinger

thinking about the power train,
What to do...

Goal> Turbo charged, Streetable, drive to the track

I have been reading, but still know little about turbos

kinda working this project backwards> Starting at the rear

using what we have already

Narrowed 8 3/4
gears- 3.23, 3.55, 3.91, 4.56

Wheels- Welds 15 x 10 with 26.5 x 12 MT Street
15 x 4 - 26x5

right now,
We are installing frame connectors
tubs
moving the springs into the frame.

next will be to mod the floor for a trans safety shield (some floor replacement)
also we are going to mod the trans cross member area for a A-500 or A518

trans available are
A-999, 727, a500, a518
have a 3500 convertor for the 727 or a518

fuel> E85

exhaust
Truck magnum Manifolds (1991)
magnum truck shorty headers
or have a set of custom headers

Engine

fresh, not finish assemble 340
10.5 comp
ported eddy heads
air gap- will need carb
No cam
H/S rockers

or
new
Indy headed 340> 449 c.i.
270 duration 650 lift solid roller
14-1 > can change pistons, never installed yet

This is what we have to work with

Any ideas what to do? :burnout:
turbo size?
carb?
trans/gear ratio?

Thanks

We bought the car with out an engine or trans.

For a street car the biggest pain with a turbo is the downpipe . If you stick with a T4 you are dealing with a 3-3.5" downpipe from the turbo.
A lot of guys like the T6 borg-warner turbo like the s400, they make good power and are cheap but on a street car running a 4-5" inch pipe past the engine can be challenging.
A common turbo T4 that makes great power for a 340 would be a PT7675 , very proven to make big power.
Here is a good article on turbo selection:

http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/hrdp-1205-how-to-buy-your-first-turbo/

Carb selection would be from someone like CSU. Tell them you want to run E-85 and they will send you a blow-through carb to bolt on that will not run lean if you have a proper carb hat and fuel system , they can tell you the best plan for your application:

http://csucarbs.com/5-blow-through-750.html

Gears: turbo street engine would be fine with the 3.23-3.55 range. The turbo likes the load.
Trans: I would contact A&A transmission and they can tell you what you will need
to hold up with a 727 or 518 .

Turbo engines throw away the traditional old school ways of thinking , big cams (custom ground for a turbo would be best) , tall gears , big header primary tubes, aren't ideal on a turbo setup. A 750 cfm carb setup is plenty big enough .

I guess we need to ask how fast you want to go? The 340 looks like the best option to me as you want a street style combo. With some boost, it should be one he!! of a ride.

With the 449" combo, while it can be set up mild enough for street use, you'll need some serious suspension/cage mods to run it at the limits it can produce. Just my opinion.

Streetable, but not a daily driver
drive to the track 40 - 100 miles one way

low 6's in 1/8th

This is very cool! Good luck on your final decision, can't wait to see the finished product. :thumbrig:

Nice start. I have a 72 with a 340 draw threw system has no turbo lag and runs 10 pounds of boost can drive it anywhere. turbo is a Garrett TO4B. We have a lot of fun with this car. it's tubed, caged, and safe. I don't regret doing this to it. note the exhaust behind the right front tire. Boosted is fun way to go.

thanks to all for the info

Been doing some reading/ thinking

Since turbos like load
What would be a better Starting Line Ratio?

rear gear 3.23 or 3.55

Trans
A-999
A-500

727
518

trying to decide which Trans/rear gear comb to run
street cruiser/ weekend track car

engine is .040 over 340,
9.64 compression
ported edenbrock

No cam yet
Watching >>>>Dizuster<<< turbo kit post

Was thinking about this
While
prepping the floor/ trans cross member for a 518 with trans shield.
Only cause it needs the most clearance to fit.

thanks
Howard
