Right. I've seen retainer prices sorta high, but I think havin a ring made at a machine shop would be more. So it never made sense to me.

If a ring was made it would still have to be secured so it wouldn't fall inside the bellhousing so that would require some additional work too. I am not a fan of machining something to make it work when a quality bolt on part is available.
Exactly.....and I've seen people do just what you describe. Just "press" the ring in and hope it stays. That just ain't good enough for me.
