Just had same prob. with my 64 valiant adding one to an edelbrock base and top. They
are tight brand new and freshly oiled on non k & n bases and tops. Let it sit outside in sun for a few hours to draw her up a little and try again. Squeeze if necessary as they do have some play n them.

keep trying, it will go. And then you never have to worry about it being loose.

Keep tightening the nut on the top, as you tighten keep pushing in the sides and it'll eventually just pop in. I had the same issue
