Check out this sad tale from the now unhappy new owner:

The short version....................

===========================================================

I recently purchased a loadstar 1700 from out west......................I drove it around town for about 25 miles, ran smooth, everything worked as it should...........................Three, yes 3, miles into it at end of on ramp(45-50mph) I heard what I thought was a backfire and the truck shut off and would not start back.

A wrecker service was called and the truck towed about five miles........................

I attempted to start the truck the next am. Given the rain, I had wondered if the distributed had gotten wet. Lokking in engine bay I noticed a small amount of oil on passenger side frame rail. The source at that moment was unclear.

I got under the truck.............. I then noticed the driveshaft was gone!! Everything from the broken flange on back of transmission, to the carrier, to the yoke on axle. All broken off!!....................................

The oil filter was spun almost off, the oil filter housing was broken, and on passenger side of block there was about a 4 inch hole in the block!!

At this point my needed parts list has grown and help and information needed
Parts. So far
Block
Timing gear cover
Horseshoe motor mount
Oil filter housin
Clutch
Bearings
Drive shafts
Carrier bearing

I would like input as I can't wrap my mind around what happened..............................

(Someone else posted...........)

IMO, Towtruck driver left the shaft in, and the engine in gear. Engine badly over-revved and self destructed. At some point in the self destruct it locked, and that's when the driveline came apart.

A coworked at our old service station did the same thing to a real nice first gen camaro with a stick shift and deep gears. He noticed black smoke pouring out the camaro's tailpipes but thought it must've been an illusion and kept going. I can't imagine a big rig wrecker would bog down under the strain of destructing your 392. Our 350 powered wrecker didn't notice it was destructing a 327.

good luck with the now-enormous project. Hope the towing insurance pays up.

(and the OP...........)

I should clarify, the drive shaft did not go across the roadway. This was six lanes of interstate and I was in the slow lane, and the drive shaft was picked up on south bound lanes just off the on ramp. About 3 miles from where I broke down on northbound

(and.......)

Interestingly the tow truck driver is adamant that the drive shaft was in it "when he dropped it off at my residence". It's awefully hard to imagine my drive shaft migrating 3miles the wrong way down the interstate buy its self.
