A friend just bought a '74 Dart Sport 360. What are these funky looking additions to the leaf springs?

Ahh....load helpers, a band aid for wasted springs.
These are not very good ones IMO.
If I had to use something like this I'd get the ones that go between the shock plate and the spring[they actually work for raising and stiffening the rear with wasted springs].

It's probably time for new leafs.
Check just suspension or mancini racing.

gives you something easy to hook to when pulling chevies out of the ditch:-D
 
I thought they would be handy spots to attach a tie-down chain for the haul trailer.

No man those are home made wheelie bars, they keep you from grinding the chrome off the bumper. Those are definitley helpers, time for a re-arch or new ones all together.
 
Helper spings??? That is what they call 'em. They help increase the load capacity but sure don't help the ride. It'll make it understeer more than stock, too.
