What have you done about this? Do you have pics of your results?

My assumptions are doing something like using a wire wheel to remove all the current filler and replacing it with something, if anyone has done this... what did you use?

First I carefully remove the stainless trim so it doesn't get damaged then I start with a narrow flat blade screwdriver, after getting most of the old seal sealer out... Next a flat wire wheel on a 4.5" angle grinder... Repair or treat rust as needed & float the area with two part seam epoxy sealer...

Take it out (your choice or method) and put new stuff back in and paint over to protect it. SEM make some good stuff you can get at local parts stores. Napa carries stuff made by trans star I have also personally used on my van. Wet your finger with water with a rubber glove on to smooth it out. Put painters tape down where you do not want the stuff to be on otherwise if you press to hard with your finger it goes 1 to 1-1/4 more than you want. Multiple coats if you want to be cautious.
Easy job. Pictures cannot show you - you have to actually do it!

I always thought that a woodworkers lathe "U" gouge of the proper size would make quick work of it without risking sharp screwdriver edge gouges.

Take the chrome off and chop out what you can with any tool you have that works. Get some cheap harbor freight wire wheels and go at it. Fill holes or open seams with thin coat of POR15 putty and then coat it with POR15 . aply seam sealer let it sit and repaint same color with a brush. Put tape on what ever you don't want to cover with POR 15 and seam sealer.

By pics, I was more hoping for finished or "after" pics.

I and many others don't use POR15, lots of hype, sometimes it works great... And sometimes it peels off for no apparent reason... Not good when your many hours into a repair & you have to take it back to base metal due to product failure...

Note taken, thank you
