What is a "hood latch support"

Actually, what is the little mechanism attached to the hood that looks like a hook?

Reason I ask, is that my valiant never came with a hood hook mechanism and recently acquired one

does it keep the hood closed in case the hood latch fails?

It's called a "secondary latch".

Exactly! Mine is bolted to the underside of the hood by two bolts. If you don't have one, I'd try to find one. Its cheap insurance.

This is the hood latch support. I think this one is for a '65 Valiant.
