what size shim

I am putting together a 489 case I got. It was a bare case so I don't know what size shim was behind the pinion bearing. I have 3:55 going in with a power lok. What shim should I start with behind the pinion bearing? Just trying to get a close start Thanks

I'd start with .035~.038". Do you have a set of "checking" bearings? Makes things a lot quicker and easier

Thanks for the help. I wish I did have a checking bearing! But no I don't. My friend who has done lots of rears is doing the rear for me. He asked the same thing!

If you have an old set of bearings that are still good you can use a die grinder with a carbide bit to slightly enlarge the i.d. so they slip over the pinion easy. That's what I did. Works great.
