I'm tired of my broken speedo cable, so I'm trying to buy a new one. Problem is I dont know what cable to get. The service manual says the tire size and rear gear sizes determines the pinion gear size of the cable. the size of my tires are 225/70/14. I dont know the gear size in my 7 1/4" rear.

what cable do I need?

If I change my rear to a 8 1/4 or 8 3/4 I will need a new cable?

The speedo cable does not vary with rear axle ratio or tire size. The speedo drive pinion, which is not part of the cable, does. Look up your cable by year, make, and model and you'll probably get the right one.

You wont need a new cable if you change rears because the cable goes on the rear of the trans. You will need to change the drive pinion that Dan talks about if the new rear has a different gear ratio

Good luck though, the cable I bought from Oriley (kragen), did not fit and they are no help with finding me one that will. All they can say is the transmission must have been changed, which I know is not the case.
