I'm ordering a 833 rebuild kit for my 1970 340 Duster. The supplier keeps asking for a tooth count on the gear set. Don't I have the 23 spline? It's a 323 posi. What's he talking about?

he could be talking about the imput gear tooth count on whether it's a regular 4-speed or an overdrive unit????

Not sure on A bodies but an E body has a 23 spline or 18 spline input shaft. Did they make different output shaft spline's? Just ask the guy. Then let us know so we don't have to feel stupid.

The slip yoke tailshaft was introduced in 1966. The B/C-body versions used the 30 spline output shaft, which is the same as the 727. The A-body versions used 26 spline output shaft, which is the same as the 904. In 1967, 383 Darts and Barracudas ordered with a four speed got the 30 spline output shaft. All other four speed A-bodies kept the 26 spline version for '67. In 1968, all A/B/C-body four speeds got the 30 spline output shaft.

I'm guessing the 1967 383 Darts and 'Cudas got 23 spline input shaft versions of the 833, although I'm not completely sure. The only other way to get an 18 spline input shaft in an A-body would be to get a 1968 Dart or Barracuda with a Hemi/four speed combo. B/E-bodies could have either an 18 or 23 spline inputs, depending on the engine.

I'm sure he is talking about the gear sets inside the transmission. If you don't have the trans out of car, you won't get that. If it is out then will have to take shifter arm cover off to count all gear teeth. If you don't feel comfortable doing that then you need service manual to follow. The rebuild will take special tools (lock & snap ring pliers, arbors, etc). I looked at my manual and it says that "Some internal transmission parts are different from standard --with high performance engines". If you're not equipped send it to specialists, Passon, etc.

He may be trying to figure out if you have early or late synchronizer assemblies. '70 340 would be the cut off. If your car was an early build it would have the early synchros...if it was later it would have the later synchros.

I'll let the rebuild mechanic do the count. I just thought the model, engine, & gear ratio would be enough to order the correct kit. BTW Thanks for all the replies fellows. Ya'll are the best!
