Starting off, this is NOT a for sale post or a wanted post, just looking for some advice.

What would you think the going rate would be for a good condition core (no rust or dirt or noticeable damage but would be a good idea to get everything looked at, and rebuilt by a pro) mopar 8.75 center section. It is a 489 case with a 3.23 ratio and cone style sure grip. The cone style doesn't scare me personally because I've seen how they can be rebuilt (sticky article on this site)
How would you price a unit like this?
 
Factor in that I am in Southern California and it seems like the going rate for claimed "rebuilt" units are going for $850-900 minimum around here.
 
A few years ago I lucked into a wrecking yard E body with a clutch type sure grip. If it had had 2.94 or 3.23 gears I would have run it as is.

They are still out there in the older yards

I paid 300 for the entire rear drum to drum.

You're in the motherland of wrecking yards, look for 60s 70s Chrysler trucks B, C and E bodies.

Online the prices are up there in the 500 to 1500 depending on condition and sure grip or not.

I think the 850-900 is more for the clutch type Dana Powerlock units. Also remember, the cone types only have two spider pinion gears, vs four for the clutch type. The cone type is a light duty unit. When they are in good condition or rebuilt though, they are fairly strong. Their weakness shows when the cones start to bottom in the case and they lose the sure grip function. If one tire spins for very long and the other is stationary, the spider pinions spin FOUR TIMES FASTER than the axles and they will quickly over heat, weld themselves to the cross shaft and spin the whole cross shaft out of the carrier and ruin the carrier. As long as it's still a tight unit and turns both tires though, they can take a fair amount of abuse.
 
i just bought a diff from PYP and it was $166 out the gate, so i'd figure a decent gear with a SG that is in reasonable, rebuildable condition would be 3~5 all day

(to note the diff i bought was not mopar or LSD, but was a desirable ratio. whatever it's for another project, don't judge me!)
 
For me, it would depend on if I wanted that gear ratio, and if I thought the r & p are good. Bearings, and servicing the suregrip wouldn't be a problem
If the r&p are good, and the ratio right, $400-500. A ratio I don't want, half that. 50% more than that for a clutch type or locker.
I had a buddy who would have fixed up an 8 3/4 for me (owned a rearend shop) for a hundred plus parts. He's passed, and so is that kind of price.
Edit. I'm planning on dropping $1500 for a new aluminum 9" center, with a spool. Rearend stuff ain't cheap no more.....

i'm so sorry.

but rest assured that it's weird enough to live in the shop with the cuda. and i'm currently trying to figure out a way to implement some mopar bits. it may be getting a 65 dart floor shifter i just picked up from a member here.

thank you for acknowledging this. too many people be living in the hamburgers were a nickle and my buddy rebuilt motors for a 12 pack past.

same here. i have a client that wanted a rear end. it was too easy to get all the stuff end to end from speedway for half the cost of an 8.75 and it's all brand new. done.

...and, it's not what you know, it's who you know, lol. My friend did my 8 3/4 with a new locker, and new 3.91s for his cost for parts. Used, it's worth twice what i paid. Just the new locker, is now more than I paid, by quite a bit. He did my 5.14 spool nine for cost too, under $500 set up with used gears, a used nodular, a new spool, and quiet. When the 5.14s proved too much, he did the swap for 4.57s for his cost for the gears, and a hundred bucks.
I don't think, scratch that, I KNOW I can't get a noduler center with a good pinion support, spool and gears, set up and quiet for $1000 today.
 
It would cost around $500-$700, my guess. The exact price would depend on the demand in your area, and the seller's willingness to negotiate.
