I'm wanting to get the hood inserts chrome plated on my 67 cuda and have received two quotes. One is pretty cheap and one is sky high! Which quote makes the most since is what I'm wondering? I had both bumpers rechromed for under $700 I believe it was. I am expecting to pay (what I thought) around $300 to $400 for both chrome plated but not $375 each!!

First quote
Hello,

Thank you for contacting Superior Chrome Plating Inc. (www.JustChromeIt.com)

Following is the quote you requested.

HOOD INSERTS $75 TO $90 EACH

The final price may vary slightly depending on the amount of cleaning, straighting and repair work necessary to prepare the part(s) for chroming. (Unusual pieces, outside of classic car, classic truck or motorcycle parts, may require a phone call to get a closer estimate.)

Delivery: Expect 3-4 weeks for delivery. Please call if you need rush service.

Warranty: Lifetime warranty on all bumpers.

Shipping: Quoted prices do not include shipping to and from.

Second quote:

These can be plated however the pitting in the fins cannot be filled and removed. It would cost apx 325.00 - 375.00 each and will take apx 12 - 14 weeks to complete
Thank you

Is this right?

Any recommendations?

If they say they will NOT take care of the pits, and still want over $700. to chrome them, then it's disgraceful.......plain and simple.

These things are almost always pitted somewhat, and I know.....I have 3 sets in my garage to rechrome, but I guarantee I won't ever spend that much on them.

I would contact the company that gave you the low quote, and get a clarification on exactly what they will and will not be doing for your parts........makes no sense to chrome a piece that still is pitted.....you'll just have very shiny pits, and it will look like hades...........

There are places that specialize in rechroming pot metal parts, and they remove the pits........I realize the process is different for steel, BUT they might be able to better tell you how to handle the problem.....do some research for guys that plate pot metal, and tell them what you have.

The pits have to be taken down and removed, or you'll HATE the results.

I agree 100%!

I have a nicer set in my garage.
The need polishing and would work great.

I was really trying to get my inserts to really knock your eyes out. The hood is going to be a low gloss black and I think it would really look good with some chromed out the max inserts. But dang I new it was high but not that high! And then take 14 weeks to get them back! Geesh!

Well I think what they have to do to really fix them is drill out all the pits. Then they use either brass or copper to fill all the holes THEN chrome plate them

Labor intensive. And you want to pay $75 for the job?

Mully, when I still lived in SoCal, I had these guys do all the chrome work on my 68 Fastback. I referred a friend to them a couple months back, and they're still around and still doing awesome work according to him.

The guys who own it are Tim and Donnie Hoak. Any of you interested in high school football championships will probably recognize Eisenhauer High School in Fontana as a 'frequent flyer.' Tim and Donnie are assistant coaches and their shop is full of trophies, awards, team shirts ... it's a cool experience if you ever get the chance to stop by, and they're very pleasant and easy to work with.

Good luck with the hood inserts!

LOL!

Yeah that would be super but I know that's not going to happen. If I called the low bidder and talked to them about it the price probably be over $500 before I hang the phone up.

I don't really need them to be perfect and don't ever expect to ever be, but I would like them to have a nice shiny appearance to them.

Basically I'm just seeing maybe someone has had their inserts (or any part) done or know someone that has and also what would be a fair price.

yeah you do, otherwise why bother getting them rechromed? trust me shiny on the outside for a season or 2 at most aint going to make you happy in the long run. i say bite the bullit and get it done professionally. pay the piper, but pay him only once! if you get it done right the first time you will get shiny, and it will stay that way. here is a link to pauls chrome http://www.paulschrome.com/
he is one of those pipers, but the work is backed by lifetime warrenty. i have used him and would do so again. he will fix every pit and then triple chrome plate with copper as a base. looks like a mirror when done and stays that way. turn around time 4 to 5 weeks. just my 2 cents

That's what I'm talking about!

Thanks Leanna!

LOL! Yeah you're right. Thanks for the info!

I'm thinking about talking to my bud that owns a machine shop. He told me if I need any parts he could make them out of billet aluminum. He could use the inserts as a template. HMMMMM!

now there is an idea, but won't the aluminum oxidize over time? either way you end up going with it do it once and you will be ahead in the longrun.....i know when i do it i like it that way, and when i haven't do it i have been sorry....

I could polish the aluminum with buffing wheels (I've got different type compounds and wheels) then get then clear coated. I believe that would be pretty nice I guess. I could get BADASS CUDA! cut into the inserts! LOL!

Keep your eyes peeled on Ebay too............

Every so often, a NICE set comes up in the search.......I nailed a NICE set last year for about $80...............stole 'em. 8)8)8)

cut them and get them anodized, then sell them reasonable and keep your buddies shop going and enjoy the fact that you helped out your fellow mopar guy's / gals times are tough stick together and see what happens =) jmo.

Hummm....billet aluminum tail light bezels:-k

LOL!

Yeah he has all types of machines and I bet he could do it. He has machines that are in one room that is always a constant temperature because metal changes sizes because of temperature variations. Pretty wild stuff!

He ordered a disc brake conversion kit for one of his cars. Got the measurements and made is own and sent the stuff back. He changed a little here and there so it wouldn't break any patent laws. Don't tell anyone I said that. LOL!

Mullinax, there is a plaing shop in Duncan you might try and also one in Augusta. The one in Augusta does repair. PM me if interested.

Thanks pushrod.

Hey 71DartGuy.

I'm still debating on what to do. I haven't contacted any other places yet. For the price of getting them chrome plated/fixed I could have went with a aftermarket hood of some sort. But I really like the stock hood with the inserts and the barracuda fish on front of the hood.
