Hi All: I'll shortly be putting a complete A-904 Torqueflite tranny that came out of a 1974 Dart into long term storage. So what's the best way to store it? Drain the oil, but leave the filter in place? Disassemble it? Store it on end with the tail shaft pointing up? Or sideways like it's installed in the car? Wrap it in plastic? All ideas welcome, thanks!

Indoors. Every one that I've encountered that hasn't been out of the weather is a disaster. Keeping critters and contaminants out is the biggest thing

Cruiser,
Indoors is the check mark on storage. I personally keep trans oil in mine covering the valve body and have 2 different 727 trans spares I had rebuilt by a big trans reman company in my local big town. Not only does this company have a dyno that they test all remanned transmissions on before they give them to the customers they have re-checked (Dyno runned) one of my 727's twice now (9-21 original rebuild date/ Retest date 9-2024 ) as they tell me to bring them back every 3 years for recheck/ retesting/ dyno run. Plastic plugs in every open port is a must for me which I get from the trans rebuild shop is another thing I demand of myself. There will be some who dont agree.......... OK
I know what works for me.... Texas Red... Gary

Thanks, Gary. Do you think it would harm the trans to store it resting on the bell housing with the tail shaft pointing straight up? Takes up less floor space this way.

A transmission built/empty case can be stored on end as it will not hold any oil standing on end . I store mine on a shelf horizontally with 2,3,4 quarts of clean tranny fluid in them as the idea is keeping the valve body submerged in a oil bath. Both of my transmission's builder suggestions.
If you want to store it dry you will have to let it drain for about a week on several oil diapers up on end etc.... before moving over to concrete... They can make a mess. Ask me how I know. Have a great week Texas Red
