wheels and rear width

So I have a question for the masses, i know people buy certain wheels with certain backspace etc. So how do i determine the width i need to have my rear narrowed for a certain wheel?

I.E, 15x10 wheel 4.5" backspace, 3" spring relocation-how much needs taked off the rear? i know its a silly question but i finally got an 8 3/4 and it needs narrowed but i don't know how wide??? Please help!!!

My car was set up for a 10" wheel with a 5.5" bs, relocated springs and mini tub. Don't know how wide the rear is.....

Thanks Ink! I appreciate the link, very good info on how to measure for back space...So any idea on the rear part gang?
