So I just took the timing cover off my engine and I’m sending out the timing cover among other things to get bead blasted and repainted. I was looking at the timing cover and trying to get the gasket out and this spring came out. Does this spring sit around the outside of the gasket or sit on the ridge inside the gasket? I want to make sure I put the cover back correctly to seal.

I am assuming your planning on replacing the crank seal after media blasting, correct?

The spring is part of the seal and a new one will have it installed in the correct place.

Yep, toss it.

Leave the old seal in for bead blasting to protect the seal mating area, then remove the old one just before installing the new one.

I would want the old seal out to clean the seal mating area. If you're cleaning with media coarse enough to damage it, you're using the wrong stuff.
