hopefully you guys here on FABO can help me, making a decision on the new oil pump...

im struggling between

Melling M72HV
and
Sealed Power SLP224-4166V

both cost nearly the same here in Germany... the question will be, what type will be more usefull for my needs

im running a high compr. 12:1 318 relocated double oil filter (way up on the right fender) and just will add an external oil cooler in front of the radiator and also an bigger oil pan (approx. 8-9 qrt.)

oil: currently 15W40 but will change to 10W60 when installing pump and cooler

i´m adding the bigger pan and the cooler, coz. i´m fighting against higt oil temp. (about 240 up to 270 F when giving full throttle)

the question is, which one will be better, when thinking about the long route from the engine to the filter, from the filter to the cooler and way back from the cooler to the engine

waiting for your suggestions

thanks from Germany
Timo

Hi Timo, sorry i can't really add any value to this perticular setup.

Just wanted to say i had a buddy with a big block Ford and a hi volume pump. His oil pressure was 70-90 lbs. which is what's required on those engines if your run them hard. He added a set up just like yours and his pressure dropped to 25-30 lbs. That's alot of plumbing you got there and i just wondered how pressure would also come into play.

Good luck, sound like a cool build.

this is funny, i just wanted to post "i think it makes no difference".....

Timo, do you have good oil pressure now with the standard pump? If so i´d not install a hv pump. The additional oil must go somewhere, if you have tight clearances in your engine it´s released trough the pressure relief valve in the pump itself - this is creating just more heat in the oil pan.

What about the water temp?

I´ve got a really big (new one) industrial oil cooler that i propably never use - if you need one please let me know!

Hi Micheal - current oil pressure is about 50 - 55 PSI during driving 2500-4500 RPM when the engine is really hot the pressure drops to 25 PSI in idle but will be still at 50 with RPMs over1000. Guess this will be okay.
Conc your cooler i know well, and you have made me an offer before, but due to the very restricted space at the front of the fish, i have choosen a cooler from Hayden sold by Stefan from AllAutomotive.

About water temp. Absolutly fine stays at 180 F -if i'm caught in a stop and go it will go through 210 F (but i guess this is caused by missing a fan shroud)

Hi Timo,

so it seems that your engine does not need the hv pump because the pressure is ok.

Where do you measure the oil temp? did you back up this values with another gauge? Electric / mechanical gauges?

As far as i know a modern oil can handle the 270° temperature. I´d use a good synthetic one.

Try another thermostat, 160° for example. Maybe you can lower your overall operating temperature of the engine - and your oil temp.

Good luck!

Michael

- Michael,
oil temp is taken at the relocated filter unit via mechanical gauge/sender

not backed up the values with another gauge, but burned my arm on the filters last summer (due to the heat)

conc. the oil used; currently running 15w40 mineralic and will change to 10w60 racing oil (Elmar (chalty2) from the German Mopar Board advised me also to do so.. as he made a similar experience with his high CR small block in his AARCuda)

your thougts about a 160 F thermostat are also worth a try i think...

Thanks Timo
(hopefully we will meet this year - how about your plans for the Mopar Nats?)

Hi Timo,

planned for this year are definitely some racing events. Since the public race days Hockenheim are at the same date as the mopar nats - i´ll be in Hockenheim i think. We´ll see!
