As requested, pics from the Sonoma and Napa districts in California. Five of us were sent there as a reward for selling wine. A coworker and I had the old schoolhouse to ourselves! It was a very rare opportunity to sample easily 100+ wines, order anything we wanted at the best restaurants, and learn about winemaking from the actual wine makers. It was almost embarassing how well we were treated. All told we visited 12 wineries...the pics only tell part of the story.

Some pics from hiking around the property...
and then some of Nickel and Nickel winery. The clear boxes show how the noticable variations in the soil within the Napa Valley.

Definately a worthwhile trip for anyone. We were told, without wine, there would be no civilization. Because in earlier times, as cities formed, there was no way to provide safe drinking water.

We only had 3 days to spend and now it's back to work. I would love to see more of the great land of California.

I don't think I could have drunk much more wine....

Glad to hear you had a great time. You deserved it...and earned it. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Did you get to take the KORBEL tour?

I love going up that way

No we didn't get to see any sparkling wine producers, that would be very interesting to have the process shown, there is a lot to producing Champagne. Here is a list of wineries we visited, if I can remember them all. The first ones in Sonoma, you can just drop in on most of them without reservations and they are very laid-back and friendly. Napa is more exclusive and some require making an appointment in advance. There is a roughly $15-$25 tasting fee at the wineries but they waive it when you 'take something with you,' and for people like myself who are 'in the industry.' The better your schmoozing ability, the more of their wines they will give you to taste. They sell wines at the wineries that might not be available in your state, and at discounted prices.

Dry Creek Vineyards...very well established, friendly, I brought home a late
harvest Zinfandel dessert wine.

Alexander Valley Vineyards...The homestead of Cyrus Alexander, for whom
the valley is named. The Wetzel family, who hosted our group, is a
large producer, reasonable prices, you can tour their massive cave
where the wines are barrel aged.

Rodney Strong...again, a major producer, very friendly.

Truett-Hurst...a tiny place, relative newcomer, very good Zinfandel.

Nickel & Nickel..newer operation of a Far Niente partners, wines from
numerous small Napa estates. Appointment necessary but very
worthwhile. Tasting room in the original farmhouse in one of the pics.

Freemark Abbey...First winery founded by a pioneer woman. Known for
their 'Library Collection;' since the '70's they set aside cases from
every vintage which are for sale. Very good value, no attitude, you
can even phone order after you get home and still get the discount.

Joseph Phelps...a little intimidating but hey you're in Napa where some of
the greatest wines on earth are made.

St. Supery...very friendly, very good wines especially Sauvignon Blanc.

Peju...slick and stylish but condescending attitude and tried to make us
pay...we just left in a hurry after the tasting lol.:finga:

I know I am forgetting some...
