The wiring diagram for the 225 slant six starter, shows the wire going to the starter as A1, gage 6B. What does the letter "B" mean? 65 service manual, page 8-109, figure 11.

I found a reference that says the B represents "Bare" as what might be used for a ground, but that makes no sense in this application.

Even up to 67 and 68 the wire is refered to as 6B

There is a B&S wire size that is a British wire size and the same as AWG

67 calls out A1-6B (R)
68 calls out A1-6B-R

A1 6B is the battery cable. Usually red. A1A 10R is the wire going to the starter relay usually red. On some early cars the battery cables were black. My 58 fury was black battery cable. My 62 polara also black You can see the original battery cable hanging down above the steering box

Thanks for all the replies...When I first viewed the diagram, it is obvious that it requires a #6 gage wire, due to the type of application, It was the "B" that was in question. I had even considered it meaning "braided" as in a grounding application, but as Dana67Dart said, "it makes no sense in this application." A bare hot wire? I'm finishing up the test stand I'm building for my 225 and being in the process of wiring it, is when I encountered the question of the #6B.

I checked further even in 73 FSM the wire is referred to as 6B and I noticed some grounds being referred to as 4G and 10G

It must mean something back in the day!

Ya want my guess?

[waiting for someone to kind of accidentally look my way so I can take it as a Yes]

It's an indication of the cable type.

"6ga Battery" and "4ga Ground."
(along with "8ga Battery" and "10ga Ground").

With "B" meaning "Battery +" and "G" meaning "Battery –".

We all know that the positive and negative battery studs are different sizes, and the terminal clamps are also correspondingly different sizes, right?

All of the other wires are terminated the same way, with some sort of crimped-on terminal end which is either a ring terminal, or snaps into a plastic connector body, but the battery cables are terminated in a unique manner, with big lead terminal clamps.

Plausible?
