Wood steering wheel retrofit

I have an extra sport steering wheel that is badly cracked. Rather that having it re-cast,I have been toying with the thought of removing all the old plastic and having it retrofit with wood. I would also be able to increase the diameter of the steering wheel which would enhance the feel of the wheel while retaining the original wheel look and horn button.

Has anybody heard of doing this before or done it themselves? Have had it done by someone they have worked with or recommend?

if your just bored, then have at it, you only learn by trying, if you dont really need it I would just start working on something else...

Search "how its made" the series on History chanel, I think. they did a show on a company that does this.
