Fifty-six years ago yesterday the Woodstock concert ended. It was one of the biggest concerts in the country. It was before my time (I was born in 1970), but have lasting memories of it all the way up to today. I grew up 15 minutes from the original site of Woodstock and have been going to the reunions most years since the mid-1980's. My father was the head electrician for Woodstock, so had lots of stories of the setup and breakdown. He also had a Bell & Howell color video camera, so filmed people sliding in the mud, lovers loving in the tents, and Jimmy Hendrix doing the Star Spangled Banner up on the stage. We still have discarded new blankets that he dragged out of the mud to use to raise his six kids.
Over the years, the original Woodstock site became a sore spot for the local government because thousands of people would show up from all over the country every year to celebrate the anniversary, and the local government wasn't making any money off of them. So then in following years, the police would wait at the site and kick people off. Some years they spread cow manure over the whole site to deter people. That didn't stop the thousands of people coming though, they just camped in neighboring fields instead.
Eventually a local rich man (one of the top ten richest men in Forbes Magazine in the 1980's, and coincidentally an elementary school classmate of my father) bought the property and commercialized it with a formal concert venue, a museum, a heliport, a champagne stocked viewing tent with air conditioning, and camping sites for $350 per night. There are still local properties nearby that allow camping for the everyday poor people that come every anniversary. I was just at one of them on Friday, listening to an awesome Greatful Dead tribute band playing on a stage in the woods. The local government is still trying to shut down all these local camping properties because the government is not making any money from them.
If anyone remembers, there were so many people at Woodstock, that the interstate thruway was shut down because of heavy traffic, and also the main highway up to the area was shut down because of traffic jams. So people ended up ditching their cars on the highway and walking/hitch hiking to Woodstock. The local towing companies were then tasked with removing thousands of abandoned/blocked cars, so the roads could open. Up in the woods in some local areas around Woodstock, there are still hundreds of cars that were abandoned at Woodstock and towed to where they sit today.

What a great insight from a local person about that historic event! I was 12, and remember seeing it on the news. If you get a chance, try to get some pics of the cars that got towed and are still just sitting where they were dropped. I often wondered if the people who just parked their cars and got out and walked, just walked back to them and went home after it was over. Thanks for the interesting post.

Just Nine, and that place looked like a horrible **** show, but for the attendants, I`m sure they had fun, got stoned and had a life long memory that will never be forgotten:usflag:

I went to the 25th anniversary and the 30th.
Took a ton of pics, still have my unripped tickets, multiple t-shirts, and other stuff.

25th was epic, a blast, imo more people there than the original. Surrounded by woods, people were friendly and helpful, became a muddy mess one day, which was entertaining.

30th was a **** show, held at the old Griffiss Air Force base. The majority of it was pavement, in July, water became scarce and people were in trouble.
Enjoyed the music though.
When the fire started we bailed.

I was 10 years old at the time. I don't remember hearing my older brother or sister talking about it.

My dad of 8 kids wasnt even born yet until 71...... I was born in 07. woodstock to me is magical I wish i was there my fav band ccr...... i mean '69, ccr, 3 albums in one go of a year. The times are sure getting a lot older and folks that have been there are bit by bit still with us thankfully. I am amazed by the stories and other peoples points of view. Coming from a pretty young perspective, its interesting to see the history behind such music and what was going on at the time. one of the few reasons I took the risk in buying my 75 dart

I was barely 2 years old. I would love to have been able to see one of the anniversary parties in person, as I still love the music from the time
Any "music" or sad imitation thereof that's newer than about the early 80s absolutely SUCKS. As in I CAN'T STAND .
the only station that plays "rock" by work revolves around 2 bands I despise/ , guns n roses and def Leppard. About every 3rd song is one of theirs, or else AC/DC which I can tolerate "some".
My old standby out of Chicago which I can get at home but not at work is headed the same way. Nirvana? HELL NO.
I love my Sirius radio/ classic vinyl /the 70s channel, most of "classic rewind" is good/ and the Beatles channels.

Joni Mitchell, CCR, CSNY, Santana, Steve Winwood, (and the rest of the band"Traffic" too) is where it's at....
I wish I could get Sirius at work. The no commercials is nice as well.
I have tried to get it at work by pulling my truck into the shop but as soon as my cab gets past the overhead door I lose the Sirius signal

Get an external antenna and a boom box for sirrius. I had one for a long time.

Early Def Leppard, good.... the pop oriented Def Leppard sucks ***. Same with aerosmith. Anything that Desmond Child writes/assists/influences can go right into a flaming dumpster.
