Well guys and gals I picked up a 340 yesterday from someone selling locally including trans and rear end and began disassembly today. Wow what a messy project! Anyway, I'm happy as a clam and sufficiently covered in 30+ year old grease and grime. I'll post pics of the new (old) engine soon so there will be a record somewhere of what it "used" to look like. I really wish I did this for a living instead of pushin' paper.

I'll have some extra parts soon for sale...when I farther along. There will be a 318 that to my knowledge is stock, a Carter carb, 7 1/4 rear end and 904 tranny. I'm not sure about the working condition of the extra transmission so it will be available as rebuildable core...& priced as such. I won't be looking to make a mint off of any of the stuff. I just won't be needing it and won't have storage for it.

But all that is still a ways away. I'm just having fun getting dirty right now. Tomorrow is more degreasing and pressure washing. :toothy7:

Sounds like your having a great time. That 340 should make a great engine for your project, good choice.

Hey! Girls know enough to use gloves. While I can take grease and grime on my face, arms, & legs, it is a real pain getting it out from under the nails. :toothy7:

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. I've only just begun so I'm not sure what "guts" are inside. The heads are X heads. I'm at work right now so I don't have the numbers with me. I've been ordering tools like crazy on ebay so I can measure stuff the machine shop will need to know (also to check their work). My husband thinks I've totally lost touch with reality on this project. Something about "when you decide to try something, you really go all out with it." It's that A personality flaring up again. I just have to know all about whatever it is I'm engaged in.

Qwik - I have and will have tons-O-stuff. Getting together so you can see if there's anything you want sounds wonderful.

The engine pictured doesn't have 'X' heads, but it does have those cool 273 Commando Valve covers!
The heads are probably the 3418915 casting number.

An apron keeps the grease away, somewhat. :D

Are you serious about the valve covers? I thought they were awful looking. I bought some black wrinkle MP covers for it.

You've got me hooked on the heads. How can you tell by the picture they are not X heads?

The 'X' heads are identified by an 'X' cast into the head around the sparkplugs.
They 'X' heads also have narrower bolt hole bosses on the lower row of head bolt holes, especially on the 2 end ones.
An 'X' head will be casting # 2531894.

If you want to sell the valve covers, PM me and maybe we can come to an arrangement?

Mark.
