Society is currently teaching our children to skip correct spelling through abbreviations and shortcuts!! Think text messaging!! How's your BFF?? OMG!! Or the ever popular LOL!! Why should anyone be judged by their spelling when shortcuts and abbreviations are not only allowed, but many times encouraged!!

I personally don't like any named spelled with a Z instead of a S, especially when the Z is used backwards!! To me, it kind of shows a lack of respect for proper spelling at the expense of cutesy!! Does all this mean that I wouldn't buy a product listed by a company or individual who can't spell?? Heck no!! But I may fall victum to Frankie's study group... A place I embrace anyway!!

I drive the people I text with nuts in that my texts are all spelled out with punctuation. Text speak is the bastardization of the English language gone to extremes.

Speaking of your pet peeve of "Z's," remember when grade school teachers - primarily those in charge of teaching the kids how to initially read and write - were having a fit about Toy's R Us and the backwards "R?"

I often use abbreviated words when texting....

Plz

Thx

I'm sure there's more & I don't really see the problem.....

That's fine. Texting is the appropriate place for it.
I don't, because it's faster and easier just to spell it out than to remember all the "secret codes". lol

And the same people that extensively use abbreviations tend to include them, in of all things, resumes and applications... Sheesh...

None of that stuff bothers me when buying a car or looking at ads. Don't care, it's the item that counts.

I'm sure the resident english/spelling/grammar nazi has a hard time not blowing a gasket when reading stuff like that ad. Maybe a fresh beverage of vinegar and water will clear him up. :)

LOL @ CB ^^^^^^

Oh, and I forgot to mention this one........

C U soon :hello2:

Note that one of the best NASCAR chassis experts EVER was a self-taught illiterate with a second-grade education!

Are you suggesting that a lack of education is a good thing?

Granted, a very few get lucky, but the vast majority of drop outs are doomed to languish in minimum wage and low paying jobs.

...and yes, there are always exceptions, it's the rule that hurts, though.

Having a skill that you're exceptional at is a blessing, not having an education is a curse.

I know I make many errors in writing, but I am trying here.

Some may have the same problem as me, and english may not be their first langauge. English is not my first langauge and i still think in my native langauge most of the time, even though i have been in the USA long enough that i dont speak with an accent anymore, some people may notice a slight accent on me but most will not even realize it....i have been Colorado-ized

I wouldn't judge someone without knowing exactly why they are making errors, some may be doing it because they just don't know and others may have a good reason and trying the best they can.

Even with that, i have to say that the one drives me crazy is when they say "for sell" instead of "for sale"

I do the same thing, Robert.

Me too, my kids can't grasp the fact that I do it that way. I have tried to convince them that they should as well so they don't use all of the abbreviated words when actually writing something important.

I have a friend who graduated from a major university with an engineering degree. Struggles to spell his own name but is a genius in his field otherwise. I'm mediocre with grammar but can't add 2+2.

It's when it creeps into every day usage that really bothers me.

Walking through the store and hearing someone say "OMG!" They do realize it's the same amount of syllables (and the same amount of breath) to actually just say "Oh my God!"

It's not on the phone where the English language is being bastardized by this, it's in every day usage. People writing everything, from facebook messages to term papers to resumes as if her or she were texting.

A wise man once told me, Son, you only get one chance to make a first impression !!

While talking with one of the younger guys at work, I asked how the hell Mc Donalds became Mickey D's. He told me it was just an abbreviation.
I said, No it's not, it's still three syllables. :dontknow:

Same way Macon became "Mac Town" and that's actually harder to say than Macon.

In fairness to the original poster KnuckleDuster, 20 years ago I might have started a thread like this, before I learned that spelling and grammar are so difficult for many people.

its not like your buying an escort, your buying a car, some children have stupid parents and visa versa...

"Runs and drives, but stuck in drive."

LMFAO!!!

THANKS!

My 67 Coronet convertible ws this way. Sat long time and the friction disc came loose from the plates. Would drive and shift thru all forward gears, but no park, neutral or reverse.

As far as the add, the guy doesn't know the 360 is a small block? Well there are so e people that get told something and believe it. If interested might be worth a look if the price is right. But he might have seen too many BJ reruns too.
