Turning back the clock

-
Denny and his wife were gone for a week on vacation and since then he has been sidetracked for a couple of weeks installing an updated K-frame with power steering and a road race style Milodon oil pan in Jim's Hemi Demon.

On the Flash he is still running brake lines; he's about done and is now up to plumbing the dual small Wilwood master cylinders above the brake pedal. Rear fuel lines next and then to paint.

Was able to locate or recreate all of the exact vintage contingency sponsor logos.

Monday we are making a trip to visit Joe Pappas and then he is going with us over to Steve Atwell's to check on the engine and to drop off the intake manifold, carbs, fuel lines and valve covers. Steve has received the N.O.S. Accel 16-plug ignition setup and the Hemi should be ready to run very soon.

You drop those names so casually!

In all seriousness, seems like you got all the right people involved here. This thing is gonna be killer when it's done.

brakes are done....maybe I will have John post some pictures of the dual Wilwood / Girling master cylinders mounted above the pedals.

Next is fuel system. The fuel tank has been modified / replicated and installed , but I still need to plumb and run the aluminum fuel line. There are several other little details I want to iron out before heading back to the paint shop. I hate to be fabricating anything once painted.

nothing much new to see until it is painted and we start the re-assembly process.....then it gets really fun.

New California Flash resto pictures.

Plumbing to the dual Wilwood / Girling small brake master cylinders connected to the VW reservoir on the firewall as was originally built at Ron Butler's.

Brand new (N.O.S.) Accel 16 plug distributors (shown on our dummy block; coils were included). Thanks for finding it, Steve Atwell!

Looks like I'm buying a crank trigger ignition.......we originally were gonna fake it, but not anymore.

the real deal with both plugs firing for the Flash

California Flash departs HDK!

The Butch Leal California Flash B/MP Hemi Duster left the HDK suspension facility Thursday and is headed out for finish paint and graphics. The processes will begin next week.

When it comes back, the entire body with race-day graphics will be ready to receive the engine which should be done about then.

After that, the many sub assemblies will be installed: glass, dash, seats & upholstery, crank trigger ignition, modified fuel tank, differential, ladder bars and wheelie bars etc. etc. etc. Most of these items have all been pre-fitted and await their final installation.

Butch always ran headers on this car with the collector outlets turned slightly down and slightly
out (see top picture). This feature is perfectly replicated on our new headers for the restoration.

There will be tabs welded on the two pieces so the turnout may be removed or replaced with a
short muffler for driving to the supermarket. Er...uh...yes officer?

So this is going to be a grocery getter and not a coffee runner? I suppose you can save some weight sans cup holders! Would probably have been considered illegal ballast anyway!

So this is going to be a grocery getter and not a coffee runner?
For Coffee Getter activities rest assured it will be operated in the fully open mode.
This is actually feasible as the closest coffee-donut shop is only 1/2 block from HDK.

the next BIG step will be firing the motor in the HDK mock up mule to dial in the crank trigger ignition, free rev contest, and leak-o-l-a check.

So the HDK mockup mule doubles as a WHOOOOMPA! tester! LOL

Yeah....just add a couple of bolt on tabs for the front motor plate and it is a WHOOOOMPA tester / multi tasker. Gotta get the most out of the high dollar equipment.

I saw Ronnie Sox beat Butch`s car "looked like that", 3 out of three at Tulsa one year .But Butch was right there on two of them.

probably was the 73 Pro Stock Duster.....I don't think Sox raced a M/P car in 75.

did you attend the P.R.A. event in Tulsa in 72?......I got to tag along to that event with 2 buddies that were a couple of years older than me....one is the guy that owns the paint shop (Boutwell Colision) that is painting this car. I had just turned 17, summer before my senior year in high school....we had a blast.

SEAT FRAMES (prior to cleaning and powder coating)

Moved the FLASH to Boutwell Customs for the start of final painting processes. The panel fit
is excellent. When it comes back it will be in the full Direct Connection livery.

Goes back on the rotisserie soon for painting .....when inverted, hopefully my two 9/16" sockets will fall out of the door post sill. Normally, I can fish them out, but with the sidebars running thru there, it is mission impossible.

I know , post is getting old, but so am I ! yeah , I went to most of the pra races, raced at most of them , think I missed one because I was pissed about they treated me the year before. I had to spot a 57 chevy - some light yrs. long, don`t remember. While he was doing a burn out, a supposedly track worker was standing in front of me and telling me to wait, soon as the 57 was done doing his burnout, the stupid ahra starter waived me to the line, cold tires and all. They were in such a hurry there was no recourse but to stage, you know what happened from there ! The year the " two ton rat", won the world champion ship, I spotted him a bunch, caught him in second gear, the race was over, but I lost high gear, and he went back around me and won the whole deal. drag racing can really suck !!!!!!yes, they were both pro stockers , but Butch`s car looked like the one old man ray is building. ----------- I dig it , keep the pics coming !
