My M-Code Cuda is finally getting worked on

-
Yep a non running car is a ***** to ship as they may have to shuffle it around on/off the trailer. Best of luck!

agree w/ MMissle... I like for them to look close to stock and run like a race car myself, but still be able to go get a strawberry shake in it .

famous bob... you and i are on the same page. all my cars are "stock" looking but have engine and drive line modifications. i'm a "senior citizen" who likes to "live in the past" as much as possible. my high school barracuda was a low 12 second ride. i still remember what that level of acceleration felt and sounded like so that's the goal that i set for my cars. the plan i have for my m-code car is to use the 69 1/2 A12 Roadrunner driveline - 440 six pack, 4 speed, 4:10 dana 60. that should guarantee a low 12 or maybe even high 11's. Ronnie Sox got a stock A12 69 Roadrunner to run high 11's and that car is about 400 lbs. heavier than a fastback barracuda. i want to be able to drive the m car so i'm going to use as much alluminum as possible on the engine - heads, manifold, water pump, etc. to get as much weight as possible off the front end. i'm also going to try and install power steering with one of the new "mini" units that are now available. the car already has disc brakes on the front and i'm also considering doing discs on the rear. because this car has already been cut up and will never be a completely original m-code, i don't feel too bad changing a few things like adding a 4speed, power steering and rear discs. the truck is going to be at my house tomorrow with the donor car body shell and then next week, that shell is going to American Metal Direct. i'm hoping to have my m car back from AMD by mid-April. then i can start working on the car at my house. it should be a nice "summer project."

well ....

the body shell arrived today at my house around 12:30 p.m. it came in the back of a very nice 26' tri axle box race car trailer. a "20 something" nice kid with a heavy accent (he was from Ukraine) was the driver. he had bought a new 2017 ram 2500 cummings and signed on with the shipping company. he said they provide the trailers and pay all the other expenses (tolls, gas, insurance, etc.). he said he just shows up with his truck and picks up their equipment.

in the front of this trailer was a VERY nice dark blue "80's (87?) porsche 911. he said it was going to indiana.

i CAN'T believe all the parts that the seller sent with this car. he told me that he would "give me everything he had" and boy ... he must have cleaned out his garage!

this is just a partial list of stuff i saw, and i didn't unpack all the separate boxes yet:
both doors
trunk lid
replacement sail panel at base of rear window between window and trunk
K member
complete front suspension parts
new windshield
large back glass
rear and door glass for both driver and passenger sides
window crank mechanisms
front/rear bumpers
manual steering box
complete interior metal trim for back seat area
both back seat sections
complete stainless trim around rear window
front parking light assemblies
rear trunk pass through door
metal dash frame
head liner bows
front grill header panel
drip rail mouldings
sunvisors
steering column
dash and gages
ingnition switch

and about 6 more boxes of stuff

i'm going to have around $2500 in this vehicle after it gets shipped down to AMD in georgia so i will be selling some of the parts. i probably will not be able to identify all the parts to sell because i will need some of the stuff for my car. but when i do identify stuff i will not need i'll post the stuff here.

another interesting car shipping experience...

Jim,

You know I am only 35 miles from the AMD Shop. I have a 24' enclosed trailer and 3500 Dually and lots of insurance. What's it going to cost to haul it down? I have some vacation time left! This is the best kinda trip as the end drop is close to home! Extra parts for the future always excites me!

gerald...

i have just listed the car with Uship to get some bids on taking it from my house down to Cleveland, GA.

i'll let you know what the best bid is. i would be happy to have you take it but how could you make any money driving up to pittsburgh empty?

i'm only shipping the body shell that is pictured on this post. its on casters and is very easy to move.

i want to get this car down to AMD this week as they are waiting on it to work on my car.

jim

I assumed you bought a complete car and stripped it. There are lots of parts that would have made the trip worthwhile (bargain time). Plus I have some friends up that way.

I have set my vacation hours now anyhow, got to use them before March 31st. I hauled mine to SC on the same Dollie wheels from USCT. Could have saved you that cost as well, that would have paid the fuel bill one way! Looks like yours are brand new and only gonna be used to transport that shell to Craig!

hi gerald...
thanks for getting back to me. i've got a couple of bids around $500 - that's seems like a reasonable number plus i need to get the car to craig this week.

i appreciate your offer. i haven't begun to go through all the parts that came with the car i just bought. i'm sure i'll be listing some stuff here on FABO.

when AMD is close to finishing my car i'm going to fly down to look it over before i finalize the deal with them. i will need the car brought back to pittsburgh so maybe we can talk about that in the future.

i'll stay in touch...

jim

parts car arrived at AMD today.... yea....

will post new pics of the m car when craig has gotten some work done. he says he's going to use the entire floor pan of the parts car and just transfer it into the yellow car. i told him i would prefer him doing that rather than use the AMD repo parts. it looks like my M-Code will leave AMD as an almost completely original "mopar metal" car.

had a long conversation with craig collins at AMD today. it seems that the parts car i sent them is going to make their repair job much easier. the best part is - the work estimate has now dropped almost $3000.00!

so it looks like the $2800 i tied up in the parts car has already been paid for with the drop in repair costs. and i still have about $1500 in parts to sell. so i'm finally getting some positive news on the project involving my M car that has now been with AMD for OVER a year.

craig should be sending me some new photos of their work soon. i'll post them here when i get them.

one last thing. i have to say again that my experience with the shipper i used from NY to Pittsburgh then Pittsburgh to Cleveland, GA was very positive. would you believe that the driver who took the car down to GA called me yesterday around 5:00 p.m. just to tell me he had dropped off the car at AMD and everything went well?!! i would say that kind of attention and consideration is about all you could ask from a shipper!!

Glad to hear it arrived safely....looking forward to seeing AMD pics!

more news from craig at AMD today. they cut the rear floor pan out of the car today. i told craig how glad i was that they were doing this work as they are replacing major parts of this car that are WAY beyond anything i could ever do. i told craig i was just an old "putty and paint" body guy - not a major structure welder!

here's some pics of what they took out today. i have to say, whoever built this car really did a professional job! this was a full blown drag car originally with a 426 hemi and all the "drag goodies" in the chassis, interior and engine bay. if anyone out there in FABO land recognizes this car from the strip or knows who might have built this car, i'd love to know. i'm pretty sure it was built and campaigned in the Boston area.

a bit of other news that might be of interest to the "racers" out in FABO land. the blue parts car that i bought is in very nice condition AND i got a clear title and the fender tag with the car. as AMD is cutting the floor pan out of the blue car and putting it in the yellow car, it struck me that if someone wanted to build a drag car, they could put the "drag components" out of the yellow car into the blue car. as such, i've asked craig at AMD to save all the structures they are cutting out of the yellow car. so the pics that i've posted could be welded into the blue car body to make a pretty nice drag car.

so if any of you drag racers out there are interested, when AMD is done rebuilding the yellow M car, i am going to sell the blue car body and the drag race floor pan and tubs will go with it. as i said, i have a title and fender tag for the blue car.

just for orientation, the second and third pictures fit together. you can see the inner quarter panels (where the rear window crank mecanisms are) in the second picture. those panels fit over top of and beside each of the rear wheel tubs.

Hey Jimharvard,

Im also in the Pittsburgh area. If you would need some help putting this car together, let me know. Im in the crafton area and always up for working on stuff. Currently helping a friend rebuild the carbs for a 70 6-pack car on top of me restoring a 67 GTS and helping my dad with his 70 charger.

thanks joe for that information !! i have another friend that i worked with at home depot in bridgeville that is putting together a 69 fastback A57 barracuda, 383, 4speed. he's been over to my house a couple of times to take pictures of and measure some things on my finished barracudas.

i will definately keep you in mind when my car finally gets here from AMD.

thanks for the offer!!!

todays pic from AMD .... just in case you ever thought - "hey, i've got some extra time, i think i'll cut the entire floor out of my Barracuda today."

Racer all those years and the radio's there and bezel uncut! Who would have thought!

Trans/firewall junction to floor looks unmodified as well!

Glad to see this 440 come back from the racing!

yea... and the best part... they kept the optional "wood" ralley steering wheel! nice originals are hard to find ... and expensive...

Wow, I remember you talking about this car a long time ago. Great to hear it's finally underway. Congratulations!

i first tried to buy this car 4 years ago when it was still a full race car with a 426 hemi. i couldn't make a deal that made sense from a financial point given the amount it was going to cost to "convert" the car back to stock. then a year ago the car reappeared with the hemi having turned into a 440. given that i was able to convince the "new" owner that he could keep the 440 and all the "race" stuff, i was able to make the deal the second time around. just goes to show you that for some old mopars, if you can't get it the first time around, if you keep after it, you might get it the second time...

It's great they send you so many pictures and updates at least you know where you stand with the project!

Picked that up as well. Finding the center and horn apply ring is easy! Looks like the switch stems/knobs are rough but heck that is the easy part!

hey 360 cuda...

thank you for the offer. i'm hoping to have the car back from AMD by the first week of april. there will be lots to do on the car which i'll need help with. i'll get in touch once the car gets here.

thanks again!!

jim

well ...

AMD just keeps plugging away at my car... got some more pics today from craig at the shop.

they've welded in the rear seat floor section, inner wheel wells and inner quarter panel sections. these structures all came from the parts car i sent them but craig did tell me they were going to media blast these parts before they installed them just to clean them up. from the pictures, it looks like these parts came out looking very nice.

can't wait to see the rest of the floor once it's installed....
