What the heck is the buzzing noise in my tranny? (1972 Duster 340 727 auto) It only happens in neutral and mainly when cold. I noticed it will not engage in reverse unless i put it in briefly in neutral first. I am going to do a tranny rebuild but really want to know what this is first in case I need other parts.

Front pump. Hook the harbor freight oil gauge up to the trans before you pull it, compare line pressure PSI to factory manual.

here is a video. sorry, some is upside down

It is specifically the pressure regulator valve bouncing back and forth in it's bore, so if you are rebuilding it anyway don't sweat it, as it will very likely be gone after the rebuild anyway.

As mentioned above, a plugged filter or being low on fluid can also cause it.
Putting it in neutral before reverse will work is a side effect of worn parts letting the fluid run out of the oil circuits, and that should also be solved with the rebuild.
(Especially if you get the modded manual valve that allows fluid circulation in park.)
