Wix is falling off my list of good filter brands

Yeah I loved working on my Harley today and seeing made in Mexico on the wiring harness and other parts.
Harley Davidson owners would be flabbergasted at what I see coming in at US Customs in the Port of LA.

maybe someday we can export liberalism there to kill their economy as well!

Annnnd…voila!

(Srsly, c'mon, let's keep it real and keep a sense of perspective. It's a pisser how it's getting harder to buy American-made air filters and distributor caps and light bulbs and stuff, but that's all it is. It doesn't mean America's economy is dead. In fact, America's economy is bigger now than it's ever been.)

you get tired of jumping through government regulations, leagal minefields, and political activism just to face a lazy, entitled labor pool (…) Someday this all will pan out, Chinese people will gain more and more standards of living

"Standard of living" is a quick, convenient way of saying once people aren't completely focused on scraping up enough money to stay alive, they start wanting things like air clean enough to breathe, water clean enough to drink, safe workplaces and cars and homes, and all that other stuff that costs money so doesn't happen without regulations forcing the rich to take somewhat less advantage of the poor.

I'm just jealous of you in Canada. The USA has fallen terribly when it comes to freedom especially economic freedom over the last 10 years. We aren't even in the top 10 anymore. Canada is the land of the free in North America now.

What I would love to see is local control of government. Little time, care, or money spent on presidential or congressional races because it doesn't really matter who is there, they didn't effect your life. The people who effect your life are your neighbors and people with shared experience in your state and county. Then if your location doesn't seem to fit with your groove there are 100's if not 1000's of other "experiments" going on out there where you can find your utopia. Liberals (and communists as long as you mentioned them) can't stand the possibility of a shining city on a hill showing the failure of their policies. Everybody has to be equally miserable.

if the average corporate conglomerate has the choice of selling :

1. 5000 American made quality widgets for a price of $5 and and a profit of $1 OR sell

2. 10,000 Chinese crap widgets for a price of $4 and a profit of $2

which will they do!???????

So very true. The idea of a HD because its an "American" bike is silly at this point. I mean HD is steady moving away form skilled workers in favor of part-timers that only work during busy seasons...funny thing neither the bikes or parts have gotten any cheaper.

Yet our dollar is kicking their dollar's *** in exchange rates....

I'm just glad /6 Dan is back online. Its been a long time. Either that or I have missing something. Probably the later.

I think they are actually no longer able to be called "Made in USA" anymore...they're over 50% imported parts.

Absolutely right! The bikes are made in America, but with lots of parts from all over the world (though they're not exactly racing to offshore everything…the very high-end LED headlamps they offer as factory or optional/aftermarket equipment are made entirely in America, not far up the highway from Harley by this company).

But the accessories and clothes and stuff, now that's a different story. What they're marketing is this (image not work-safe, borrowed from this cartoon). But what they're selling is a huge lot of made-in-China jackets and hats and boots and patches and all kinds of other stuff.

Naw, I cut way back on my posting. I barely ever migrate beyond Ulf's build thread and the occasional parts-for-sale ad these days. The bills ain't gonna pay themselves, so I gotta work!

You've got good reason. As a country, Canada does a bunch of important things in a more thoughtful, less problematic way than the US. And by a bunch of reasonably objective measures, Canadians are more free than Americans.

But aside from the current Prime Minister being an exception, Canada is generally a whole lot more liberal than the US, and I thought you said you hate that...!

Except for an occasional slashing of the toolman's comments! LOL

Wasn't this a thread about oil filters? If this political conversation keeps going, needs to be moved! how about K and N filters? thanks. MT

No, it started out as a thread about where air filters are made.

how about K and N filters?

Total scam, unless all you care about is keeping spiders, seashells, small children, and chunks of concrete out of your engine. Actual dust and dirt flies right through 'em. See here and here. ("…After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N plugged up nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt…")

There is a ton of crap they sell made in China, but a lot of the clothing has been made in other less totalitarian countries, Mexico makes a ton of t shirts. Started drifting away from China a couple of years ago.

It's sad that the engines aren't made in Milwaukee anymore.

Backing it up with science! Interesting reads.

LOL I was just kidding! but K and N air filters do breath better. Need to keep them oiled. AND I did miss the AIR filter part. thanks.

I stand with you on. And just to add, unfair trade agreements and policies that make US products more expensive (and safer, quality made, etc)

My favorite bummer sticker from when the ford plant (now a mall) near my house closed
"Hungry? Out of Work? Eat your Import!" still looking for one of those for my cars

Picked up a Wix air filter for my daily driver '91 Dodge the other day. The box is printed up with the usual verbiage about how Wix is a great premium-quality filter, etc. The filter is inkstamped "MADE IN CHINA".

Nope, I won't have it. I haven't checked where Wix oil filters come from lately; some years ago I switched to Fleetguard. I put in a call to Fleetguard (Cummins Filtration) and asked where their air filter for my car is made; answer came back "We make that filter in the United States". I shopped around for two minutes online, found a friendly price, and bought three of them to make the shipping worthwhile.

I'm not going to bother informing Wix they've lost a formerly loyal customer and evangelist; there's no point -- all I'd get back is scripted babble about quality assurance and ISO-certified facilities.

Sooner or later in a conversation like this, someone might say something like "Lots of good stuff comes from China. Iphones and Ipods and Macs are made in China." That's certainly true. What's also true is that there's rampant counterfeiting, corner-cutting, spec-ignoring, materials-cheapening, and all kinds of other cheating in Chinese manufacturing, especially in inexpensive, simple items that look pretty much alike from brand to brand. Like filters, for example. I want my engine to live a long and happy life, so…no Chinese "filters" for me, thanks.

Yeah, in order to have the 'Made in America' declaration doesn't require the entire process to be done here. Sad but true.
