Hi guys,I have a set of ( # 1600) Hughes banana grove rocker shafts that I'm planning to use in a 360 with a set of MP non adjustable stamped rocker arms.
I noticed that the (# 1600) Hughes shafts differ from the stock shafts mainly in the orientation of the oil holes: While the(#1600) Hughes shafts have the oil holes drilled to line up with the rocker shaft bolt holes, the stock shafts have the oil holes drilled 15 degrees offset compared to the rocker shafts bolt holes .From what I've leaned the reason for the offset holes is for better lubrication of the area of maximum contact/friction when properly installed !!!. with(#1600) Hughes shafts you only need to make sure that the oil holes are pointing down .As far as banana groves, they are designed to improve lubrication.
Has any of you guys used a combination like this? . Any reasons in favor or against doing it ? I'll 'appreciate your inputs.
Thanks in advance.

You need to give Dave Hughes a call first thing monday cuss yes the oil hole should be offset from the hold down bolt centerline maybe not as much as the stock OEM. In your picture the oil hole looks offset but not by much. Even their website picture shows them offset, maybe they've changed the amount or something may have gone wrong when they were drilled.

I would run those as they are especially with the stock style stamped rockers. Those banana shafts are better suited for a different style rocker arm. Over kill for what you are doing and the Groove is a waste for your application. I would run the stock shafts unless they have galling on them. Save those for when you can get a set of adjustable rockers!

And YES I have the Hughes 1.6 Rockers, banana shafts and their billet hold down kit.

If I understand you correctly .Your rocker shafts are exactly like mine with NO offset oil holes ? In other words there is nothing wrong with mine ? The invoice stated in capital letters "INSTALL SO OIL HOLES ARE DOWN AND TOWARDS THE EXHAUST" I called them at that time and explained that I did not understand that statement because the shaft had no offset oil holes and the guy said that I should not have any problems. Go figure.

I agree with you. the picture distorts the reality .There is no offset when you look straight down I even used a small ruler to confirm it. Thank you, I'll definitely call them again this coming Monday

Mine are the same way. It must be the way they are. I have over 3 thousand miles with no problems. I have taken them off and checked them. Looked great. I thought the same thing. I thought it should have been offset.

I'm using Hughes rocker shafts and mine are offset just like your factory ones are. I've had mine for a while now and maybe since I bought mine, whoever is making them for Hughes screwed up and didn't offset the holes like they should. I would for sure check back with Hughes on it.

What I mean is you will have no issues when using them. The shafts have PRESSURIZED OIL in them and it SQUIRTS out of the holes, it doesn't just DRIP OUT. You will be fine using them. When you use a Roller Rocker that covers the whole shaft around the oiling hole and banana grove that is where you will see a difference in keeping the oil at the contact point longer than using a Factory style rocker arm........... I would have no problem using them. And YES mine were just like yours but again I am using Hughes whole set up Adjustable Rockers etc!

Both Demon Seed and 416stroker were right on the money! I talked to Dave Hughes himself and he told me that the manufacturer made a mistake by not drilling the oil holes offset as required . Just to know my options , I asked him if it was possible for me to return them for exchange and get the offset shafts but he said that he was all out of those. He also said that he's sold a bunch of the ones that I have and that no problems have been reported . He also told me the give him a call if I have any problems.

I'm going to go ahead and use them.

Again, thank you guys for your help.

Isn't that funny how Hughes doesn't even check their stuff.....haaa, sell that chittt and get it out of here yesterday!! I bet you they got a Discount from the Manufacturer for their screw up also and in NO WAY will they pass that onto the buyer! haaaaa

If it were me I'd send them back for a refund and get some with offset holes but that just me.

I agree with 340sFastback. Send them back and ask them to either replace them with the correct ones or refund the cost to you. It absolutely does you no good when Dave says call him "IF" you have any problems. Then what?? Will he take care of "those" problems at no cost to you? Not likely! Granted, you will probably be okay with those shafts, but I would want shafts that are made correctly. Close only counts in horseshoes.

You may want to buy a set thats actually correct,if you use those and something goes wrong, good luck dealing with Hughes...

exchange, or if in a oinch for time.....cut a small groove to feed that particular side of the rocker, or better for strength...drill new holes

The shafts I run from rocker specialties are 4 time as thick as those and have 2 oil holes per rocker & 'no banana grooves'
I'd call gary [rocker specialties] and buy his 'higher quality' shafts=$110 a set.

back before we could afford banana grooved shafts, we made our own out of stock shafts and a thin cutting wheel.

Do you have a picture of those shafts? Never seen Dual oiling before....

got a new set of p3577086 shafts...have two sets of oiling holes...

one set is grooved and is in line with the mounting holes on the bottom

second set is not grooved...and are offset toward the intake side of the engine..

tell you what, unless I can find a pic in my computer, I'll pull one off tomorrow and take a pic, heres a side view to show how frickin tough these are.

I think you need a bigger clamp on that fuel line "mickey mouse"...

Hmm. based on your description, it looks that all I need to do is drill the extra offset holes. everything else is there ... Hope we can see some pictures...

Harland Sharp shafts have two holes...straight thru...no matter how shaft will be installed..one will be on the top ...one on the bottom

these are the T/A shafts with grooves...the pictures are of the shafts upside down...

you can see the grooved hole and the extra hole to the right.

like I said....

The shafts have a hole on the bottom inline w/shaft bolt holes and one that points toward the springs. I also use bushed mopar Iron adj rokers that have bronze bushing w/oil grooves cut into the bushing top and bottom.

btw, your welcome...I had to pull them off my driver just to show you what I had already described....lol

oh.... and no shaft flex here...no need for billet hold downs and the rest...
