Ok, this is about texting. I'll admit I'm not a tech kind of person, as for computers,I can log into web sites and thats about it. My cell phone is just that, a phone. It doesn't text or surf the world wide web. I believe in yapping on a phone or talking face to face, I hate email too. It seems like people will stop talking in mid sentence to whip out their phones to answer or too just text. Is it common knowledge that texting supersedes face to face and I missed the memo, or is it just plain rude?

It is rude and that is were we are going as a society. As far as the texting I am like you and prefer a call because it is more personal. A friend was deployed and said texting is what he prefers because in a war zone quiet is good. That I understand. I figure we had morse code years ago and texting is basically going back to that.

It's just rude.
My cell phone is used as a phone only too.
But, i guess i'm old and behind the times.

Texting is handy for something like sending a phone # or other short info, but it is useless for any sort of real time conversation.

I think the old morse code operaters probably could communicate faster than any text users.

Have a cell phone.I only use it for emergencies,as a matter of fact I think it's lost because I haven't been able to find it for a couple of days.I always felt that since I grew up with out one I really don't feel the need for it

I totally understand here you coming from.my wife and kids are into that and it really pisses me off.I tell them I came from a world that if I can't look them in the face and talk or at least here there voice on a phone I'd rather not talk to them.I will email people long enough to get a phone # to call them.what scares me is what it will be like 10yrs from know....Artie :wack::violent1::protest::protest:

It's the world, same here, do not text nor do I carry my phone if my wife is with me, I think less is more and I am going to stay that way...
And my family and friends know not to call to just say hi and just set there on the phone and not say anything :banghead: yes this does happen!!,
I don't do phones, I keep it when I am out and about for emergences only, I do enjoy a phone call
from members here and all but way does my ear get hot when I am on it
I know where my satellite is on my phone system from my location and always put the phone between me and it. I don't get pictures or anything
I blocked it (my wife did that for me) she text's me at noon so if I am getting a nap in it won't wake me up just checking in she rights. I never reply, If anyone need help thats good, but don't call unless you are bleeding or broke down and need help. memike don't do phones :D

I gotta be honest. I text more than I talk on my phone. Keep in mind that I'm 48. My daughters live a few states away. Yeah, we talk on the phone, but we can flip a quick note to each other on a daily basis, even if it's just to say howdy. It's also how my wife and I pass info during the day.

Here is why it works for me. I don't interrupt what I'm doing for a text. I leave my phone on my toolbox unless I'm on a test drive. Someone sends me a text, I read it when I go to my box to get a tool, fill out some paperwork or whatever. I won't stop what I'm doing and run to see what it is, it's there when I get to it. I never answer my phone at work. Unlike my coworker who will answer every call he gets and sneeks off to hide and talk. I was the foot guy when we were bleeding brakes on a car one day when he got a call. He left me eight feet in the air while he scampered off to talk. He was very lucky to go home in one piece that night.

Anyone remember how life was before these nifty little distractions?

I have a phone that does all the stuff that i can do on the computer, and I use it that way too. However; I was raised to have respect, which is the real problem these days. I prefer to get a text when anyone wants to talk to me, generally because I HATE talking on the phone, and useually it's just to see what's going on for the weekend, or to make dinner plans with friends, no need to drag on a conversation for more than a few texts for that kind of stuff.
I do NOT answer my phone or return a text if I am talking face to face tho. I will check it to see who is calling or texting, but unless it's an emergency, it goes right back into my pocket until I'm done talking with the person I'm with.

I was in the middle of a pool game with a friend when he got a text.
It was his turn and he stood there pushing buttons, so I set my stick down and left.

The other day I was waiting in a line to order lunch and there were two guys in front of me, and one of them was texting back and forth with someone.
Finally they are ordering and the other guy tells the person at the counter what he wants.
Then he turns to his buddy and say's "What do you want?"
The guy with the phone looks at the menu and says "Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
All that time in the damn line and he doesn't even know what he wants yet.

RUDE!

I coulda kicked him in the ***.

Mike maybe this is from living on top of the mt.I'm not able to drive my big truck any more so I got ride of the phone.my wife worries about me wen I leave the house to go somewhere.I tell her if something happens someone will find me........Artie:coffee2:

A customer came in to see me the other day to inspect his car. When I came out, he was on his cell. He nodded in the direction of his car without saying a word to me. I went out to look at it. A couple minutes later, he finished, apologized for being on the phone, then immediately tuned me out to text. I just walked away after that.

I resisted going with a smartphone and texting for a long time. But then I found that most of my customers actually preferred to text. Mostly because a lot of plans don't charge for texts. I prefer a face-to-face conversation, but here's why it works for me:

I have no internet at the shop. When I call out for a part and there's some question as to what's listed in the catalog I can pull out my phone, do my own research, and call back my part's girl with the part number I need. Or, sometimes, I need something that's available that's not listed in her catalog. Again, out comes the smartphone, I find the part number, she looks up the part by the number I just gave her and bingo! she can have for me out of the warehouse the next day.

I can keep a record of a quote on a job through text. It's a little easier, this way, as sometimes if a job comes in more than what my customer can afford and they have to put it off for a week or so to budget for it, then I have a time stamped record of what I just quoted 'em on my phone as well as the paper estimate I hand 'em as they pick up the car.

Or, if they approve the job, but then say I misquoted them on the phone what the price would be, I have no record of the conversation - in this case the customer is always right. If I text 'em, then I have a record, with a time stamp that says they got the message with the price I quoted 'em. It takes away the notion that they are now trying to undercut me by saying that's not what I told 'em the job would cost. I also have a text back to me saying the job is approved at the price I just texted to them. (I will put a caveat on this: my customers are good to me. I've had this happen once! But once is a enough. The customer who did this to me once is no longer a customer as I told him to pay his bill and find another shop to work on his car.)

I will say, though, that if I receive a text or a phone call while in the middle of a face-to-face conversation, I will defer to the face-to-face and reply to the text when it's convenient or let the phone call go to voice mail (or missed call).

If I'm standing in line at a check out register at a store, I will do the same thing. I'm sorry, it's just freakin' rude to stand there and conduct business, making purchases at a register and yak on your phone. Engage the cashier. You're doing business at that point.

If I'm waiting in line, say at the bank, and I get a phone call that's business, I'll excuse myself from the line and go outside. The people around me don't need to know business and it's rude to stand there and talk to someone who's not even there if I'm unwilling to engage the people standing there with me. When I go back in, I go back to the end of the line. It's that simple to be polite. Manners don't cost a thing.

Someone will find me :D good one ..
My wife and sons use the texting thing allot ALLOOOT!! so I am sure it is a good thing for most, But, when I read a text that said WHAT YA DOING I call them, texting with my spelling skills and these #12 ring fingers is very hard
nune less making sure I text the right word , I did try it for about a month and it seemed I got allot of junk reading, so I gave my free upgrade to my grandson and have a small old flip phone by Samsung small enough to fit in a watch pocket... I would like to have a base unit cb I do have a cobra cb ready to hit the air waves  Those where the days and they could come back

Both cell phones and texting have their place, i'm not a fuddyduddy.
But people can be extremely rude with using both of them as well as computers.
I found that 90% of the texting people do are useless chatter like some people on facebook or twitter.
And they are very addicted to it.
It's bad enough that i'm addicted to FABO, but it's a good thing!

I don't do text or web on my phone. I see a ad on CL that says text only I pass it by

ok i am younger so probably makes a difference but i have a smart phone and use it a lot. i agree on the rudness of people texting or facebook or tweeting. i have my phone set up to do more than most peoples pc will. like torque awesome app for a phone it is a complete diagnostic machine in your hand for $200. they send you the plug for the cars computers and you read out the info on your phone. thats just one thing i use it for lol. idk how many times my friends car broke down or wouldnt start and i solved it with a simple text. its all in how you use it the same goes for all tech. In the wrong hands its just evil lmfao

http://torque-bhp.com/ go check it out i have 1989-2011 cars on my phone
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en android app page for it

These things are just new ways of communicating. Some are more appropriate than others, depending on what you want to accomplish with it. Along with the good comes the bad, but that's down to the people using it, not the technology in itself. Distracted driving will eventually become universally criminalized just as drunk driving is now. They had "hands-free" laws in Europe back in the early 90's. Rude people will suffer the same consequences they always have.

Hopefully they wise up before it's too late for whoever they pissed off last time.

Rude....good word. No cell service out our way so it is not a problem for us. Thing that makes me laugh is how people are so wrapped up in there phones they are not paying attention to where/what they are doing. Was leaving the bathroom at Costco shortly after having shoulder surgery. Arm was in a sling and had that stupid pillow as well. Guy was walking along staring at his phone and did not see me. Good thing I was able to turn, nailed him with my good shoulder and put him on his ***. He jumped up and tried to apologize but told him not to waste his time.....He is not the first clown that I have mowed over as they were walking along aimlessly staring at the phone.

I would consider intentionally running into someone who did not see you coming to "put him on his ***" as the definition of rude.

They have 15 yard penalties for that in the NFL.

THANK YOU!! I enjoyed the laugh for sure :D
People would be surprized to know what causes most car accidents :banghead:
