Any of those tarps are only going to last so long. Short of a canvas tarp the heavy duty silver tarps are usually the best around here.

I know you say you have no money but these car ports would solve your problem. They start at $595 here.

I hear you, brother. I store mine every year, but $500 is getting to be a lot for the season. I think it's staying home this year and my Buick will be out in the snow.

I have to ask, I have lots of room in the back 40. Do those shelters work well? I'm worried about rodents and also snow blowing underneath.

Since you have acreage a shipping container might be something you would want to consider if they are available in your area.

"Carolina Carport"

It's that metal roof you are talking about.

The basic, 12x20 x7 high is $700.

You can buy matching metal at lowes for about $40 per 10 foot by 40 inch section and enclose it yourself cheaper than paying them to do it. (and on your own time and budget)

Not sure if they work in CA or MN, but might be similar companies.

Pays for it's self REAL quick if you're spending $100 a year on tarps or $500 on storage.

ya its been great as you can see the sides can be fa sen down i get almost no snow inside no rodents or rain best buck for a poor guy like me.

I finally built a couple of 'ports but even then they cost me some coin. Bought some new/ surplus "about 8 ft" channel part of a shelving system, 7900 lbs!!!!! Forget, think I paid but I bought new roofing and that ain't cheap. But after all said and done, I don't HAVE to shovel it and when I die I just won't GAS

Sometimes a little blows in, LOL

depends where you are located ....where I am at tarps and tin don't work because its flat land and a runway to tornado alley.

we don't get tornados here but we annually get 65 MPH wind gusts when the seasons are changing.......the wind whips through here off the mountain and charges up to be Kansas' next tornado.

also I have a problem with hail ......I am in the "hail Belt" and every few years we get golf ball size hail when them clouds charge up and get that all too familiar greenish tint to them.

here I found the best solution is a pole barn ...I get 4x4 studs and dig them in the ground about 4 feet and frame it and use plywood .....liquid vinyl or stucco on the sides and roll roof on the top and Pray that the wind don't rip the roof off and hail over everything ....so far my pole barns have stood up to the wind and hail with only roofing replacements needed after a good hail.

The metal roof ones work well and can hold a good amount of snow which is one of the problems with the canvas top ones, the tubing crushes and the top can tear as well. Unfortunately the best solutions are usually the most expensive but worth it in the long run, even cheap temp solutions add up over time. Both need to be anchored to the ground so a good wind doesn't move it around. My son had one fly 100 feet or so and land it a crumpled heap during a storm.

As far as tarps go the best one I ever bought is the orange/blue ones that truckers use. The 8x12 one I use on our trash trailer was $60 or so. It is beyond durable. Wife uses it to drag tree trimming around the yard. Have had enough stuff on it where we needed the tractor to move it, still did not rip it....

My original vinyl tarps lasted 3 years and now they need replacing. A replacement is $100. That's only about $34 a year so it isn't that expensive. However, I live in SoCal where the brutal winter temperatures can get down near 45F.

What is the inside width on a shipping container. I rent a storage unit and have been thinking either shipping container or an enclosed trailer. Then put some kind of solar fan for ventilation.

If I remember when I am in town tomorrow I will go to the place I got the tarp from and get the name of it....searched online & could not find it...

The biggest problem with shipping containers is there is alot of moisture if you have warm and cold temperatures so around here in NY we put continuous run exhaust fan in one of the walls. To eleaveate the problem...Bill

i have use large sheets of rolled rubber roofing as tarps and believe me it will last a very long time!! i even lay it out on the stone floor and park on that stuff in my one storage bay. it keeps the moistures from getting to the underside of the car. we have a lot of people that use this stuff to cover their winter wood piles all year around! i know of several people that have been using the same rubber roof tarps for 15-20 years and they basically have just sun faded with no signs of wear or holes! it may not be the cheapest but it will last almost forever! here is a link to a place that you can buy it in different sizes and thicknesses. with prices! fasten this to your structure with self drilling screws and large fender washers and u will be set for many years!!

Not the first time I have seen some one used rolled roofing.....

I reinforced my "carport" by adding three 4x4 posts anchored in concrete for the back wall I added, and four in the front wall for door supports.

"Out of the box" it was rated for 120 MPH winds, but I paid $100 for a few 140 MPH upgrades just short of having the entire structure 140 certified.

We do get the occasional hurricane through here, as well as tornadoes and hail, but usually, no snow.

Now I call it a "pole garage".

I think the main issue with shipping containers is crawling out the window of your car.
I suppose you could add a door on the side.
One of my friends had a military container that had telescoping side walls which almost trippled the capacity (and the width).

My shelter is from king canopy. Lasted 4 years id say. Just got a replacement direct from mmanufacturer for less than 100 with new straps.

I need to find a new one too. My canopy colapsed under a heavy wet snow this spring. The tarp held the snow, but the structure just folded up under the weight.

My satellite was kept under a canopy by the PO.

While it helped keep the cowl from rusting, which I am thankful for, there are two fairly severe dents in the hood, most likely from a collapse.

VERY lucky it wasn't the quarters.
