Typing this with one hand...

Made a foolish mistake late this morning. Ended up losing the end of my middle finger on my left hand. It happened fast.

I went out to the garage to do a little tinkering, it's my day off. I plugged in my air compressor so I could blow off the engine I had on a stand, cuz I am getting ready to remove the intake. As the compressor was running I noticed the air hose was very close to rubbing on the belts. So I reached down to grab it and...

That's when it happened. Bam! Amputated the end of my finger.

The guard is missing from my compressor. Yeah, foolish mistake.

Anyway, been working around and with every type of power tool you can imagine, this is my first accident. This just sucks.

How bad is it? Just the tip, to the knuckle? Did you have a Dr. look at it?

Hope you are ok.

Yes !! If it is bad deep and past the nail ain't no telling what got in there, and extremity can get infected quick and before you know it the hole finger will be taken off !

Took most of the flesh and bone down to just below my nail bed, about an inch. I just got back from ER, gotta go back to see a hand surgeon / bone specialist to get some more of the bone removed so they can pull some hide over it and close it up. Dang hand is throbbing a bit. My index finger was lacerated as well, but no bone damage. Just stitches to hold it together.

10 to 1 I bet you got a tenets shot :glasses7: not unless you had one not long ago, but even though I would bet you got one 8) Man that was a bad move but we all do things like that at times :goodman:
The older we get the easier it is to make a wrong move, just this morning I opened the coffee maker, put coffee in it and turned it on ... waited....waited...
...... no perking sound :eek:ops: I guess I need water in it and opened it up and pulled the water tank out and burned my finger :eek:ops: I am trying to slow down and think twice before I make a move these days :toothy1: elevate it if doctor said it was ok to.. man my finger is hurting now :protest:

That sucks. Hate to hear stuff like that...made me pee just a little.

We always try to be careful but sometimes things get you.

So sorry

Sorry to hear of your accident. I can't imagine your pain. Wish you a speedy recovery.
Machinery knows nor cares about age. I happens before you know it. I've seen several finger amputations working in powder metal pressing for 26 years and have come close myself. One person I took to Delnor hospital along with the severed part. They wanted nothing to do with trying to save it.

Crap I guess I need to come up with some type of guard on mine since changed to larger pump. I you recover without any problem. Hope you have good health insurance.

Ouch.....sorry for your loss....not trying to be a smart arse....

Wow, hope and praying that you'll get easement from the pain, and be back up and at em soon!! Geof

X 2 here as well, I hope it heals up and the pain subsides soon..

Yes, it's too easy to "let our guard down" when we get older and sometimes we think we know enough to take the risk. Both in taking off the guard, and carelessly reaching near it. Those guards can be a pain to deal with, but are necessary for safety. I will be more careful myself, trying to learn from your mistake.

Good luck with your recovery. Hopefully the doc's gave you something to help with the pain. If not try some Aleve and possibly a shot of whiskey until the pain goes away.... The shot of whiskey is optional at your discretion.

Sorry for the pain. Making me sweat just thinking about it, I can't imagine what it feels like. I stupidly sliced my finger on a kitchen mandolin a couple days ago, it happens.

Dang Mark that flat out sucks! Them things will grab you quicker than you can blink. I had something very similar happen when I was young and just starting to work on cars. Luckily mine was just cut bad and I didn't lose anything. I pray for a speedy recovery

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the kind words. It really means a lot. I don't know if this will be appropriate to show a picture, but here goes. This was taken just before they snipped off the skin that held the end of my finger on. That's my fingernail twisted around 180 degrees and ripped out.

DAMN DAMN DAMN...MAN..I feel for you and hope you got some pain pills you are def gonna need them...sorry that happened,I lost the end of my right[am left-handed] index finger when I was 19 in a rootbore machine[picture a sideways drillpress,hi-speed air powered with 2 bits] at la-z-boy plant in Neosho Mo...had to wear a metal gaurd for almost 3 yrs over my finger it was so sensitive to weather[hot/cold] the wife calls it my ET finger since it is angled but they[DR.s] managed to save the nail bed so I have a fingernail, finger is about 3/8" shorter than the other, and yes they throb like a sob, keep it elevated,I was off work for 4 freaking months almost went still crazy...will take some time to heal from that one....

Sorry about your accident.
Hope you heal quickly.

I lost a piece of my middle finger on my right hand when
I was a kid, they fixed it with a skin graft from my leg.

It was very sensitive for several years but went back to
normal feeling, I never notice now unless I catch it on something
or grandbabies point it out.
Gets me all kinds of sympathy kisses from them.:goodman:

DAMN! That's brutal!

You have my sympathies, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I thought I had it bad when I took the tip (didn't take any bone off) off my middle finger on my left hand with a finishing hammer... It had been a long day, and I figured I'd finish installing the hardwood flooring in the kitchen, no sooner than I started (only had one row left), first nail, first swing. Took my finger nail and the meat off the end of my finger off in one swing.

The finger nail grew back eventually, but my finger is a hair shorter now and it makes playing guitar a painful experience.

In fact, I stopped playing guitar after that, till one of my friends wanted me to teach him how to play. So I ran out to Lowes, bought a Plumbing Cap for 1/2" pipe and that's what I used for a fingertip while playing guitar/teaching my friend.

Lately I've been getting back into playing, without the cap, in an effort to build up some kind of callous on the fingertip so I don't need the cap.

You had to go and post pics

Before I realized it, I scrolled down to far and saw the picture

I can never un-see this..... Yikes !

Wow that sucks, I'm guilty of some of the same types of violations. Those pictures should make all of us think twice.

I smashed the tip of my index finger really bad. Needed hand surgery to fix it. They saved it but no feeling in it now. Really sucks for trying to start or remove nuts and bolts with my fingers.
