Busted by code enforcement

-
We live in a broke ***, unincorporated county. There is .7 Sheriffs per thousand residents compared to the national average of 1.7 or what ever it is. Only real code enforcement we have is the building department. We have no animal control etc. so things are pretty much a free-for-all here. Am I saying the laws do not exist....NO!......just that they are not enforced. There is a 5 acre parcel not far from us that is fenced in....and was packed corner to corner with junker cars. Has been that way since 02....spoke to a Sheriff about it and was told there is not much law enforcement can do as there is no local laws about vehicles being licensed.....unless they are being driven. I just found out yesterday, from the Sheriffs dept., that we do not even have a noise ordinance.

No noise ordinance??? :burnout::burnout:I try to be respectful and considerate of my neighbors but I can't seem to fire my Duster up for even a few seconds without getting a visit from the Sheriff's department.

Last year I got a notice about my sons Shelby Daytona, that was covered in my driveway . We were rebuilding the engine over the winter. Anyway the notice said I had 30 days to get plates on it and driveable, or it would be towed away. I went to the zoning office, and talked to the man in charge (nice guy) He told me that he would give us an extra 3 months to get it driveable. So that was a total of 4 months. Which was enough time.
I thought that a neighbor call about the car. It was unliscenced and under a tarp for several months. But the guy at the zoning office told me, that once a year in the spring, its his job to see if there are any junk cars .
I understand the junk car thing. I mean I would not want my neighbors yard to have 8-12 cars that are junk/rusted/ non running.
If the car had plates. He probably would not have sent the letter. We did put it inside my fence until the engine was completed.

Talk to your cold enforcement guy.

Mine says all vehicles in front of our house must have current plates and village stickers. Anything in the back yard does not have to have tags etc, especially if you can't see it from the street.

Maybe all you have to do is put a good plate on it, then go get a plate....

If they require them to be insured also, just get some insurance until "all is clear", then you can cancel your insurance after you show them that it's insured.

They are technically "officers of the court" and the No Trespassing rules do not apply....least that is what I was told...

That's how some of the local towns get around the whole "code enforcement can't come on your property to look."

Out here in the sticks, it's true code enforcement can only come on your property to serve notice. He has to have someone call you in. I had to move one out last summer when the drug dealing neighbors called me in.

In Horseheads and Elmira, the code officers are deputized. As such, they're "officers of the court" and can come and inspect without prior warning. Of course, probable cause comes into play, but for some reason, people are unwilling to exercise their Constitutional rights.

Works in some states, not in others.

In New York you have to have insurance to get the plates. In order to drop insurance you have to turn your plates in.

I agree move out of the subberbs!!! live in the "free" country side. be back off the road where no one sees your stuff, put a sign at front gate "trespassers will be SHOT! old car lovers enter slowly......" LOL..... no really.....

A lot of cities have that same ordnance. I had that in my old town. Put it on a trailer or spend fifteen minutes getting it registered. My old town required they be on a hard surface, so I put patio blocks under the wheels. Problem solved.

If it hasn't been mentioned... Antique tags here are cheap and require no inspection sticker. Easy way around..

In Ohio we have historical /collector tags. Buy them once and never have to renew! Even most law enforcement officers don't understand how to look them up.

I went through the same thing in Amarillo TX. Here in Amarillo, if you put your car on a licensed trailer, they can't touch it.

I ended up putting plates on one car and the other in the garage.

Ok so I don't post a lot on this site but more or less look for information. I got a letter in the mail today saying my duster is in violation of not being tagged. It currently does run but have been working on it and am building a 360 for it. Has anyone else run into this and what do I say to the officer. Oh yeah btw the reason I didn't re register it was the exhaust crapped out and I wasn't going to spend the money to fix it when I had started on the 360 and would have to rebuild a new exhaust anyway. Any thoughts and ideas would be great. Thanks! Brett

Non-op registration.

In oklahoma we just have to buy a black tag. An inoperable vechicle tag. Cheap and avoids penalties later when yor ready to tag it.

I keep my toys in the garage. My father in law had some trash vehicles that the city got on his case about as his neighbors complained NONSTOP. They are assholes outside of this issue but he did end up having to get rid of things and tagging others.

I can understand someone not liking the way your house looks but I'm a firm believer in if you pay your house payment, and land taxes, you should be able to do whatever you want within the confines of your own property lines. I know this isn't how it works in most places but for someone to judge what your "area" looks like is ridiculous in my book. That's like me complaining because I don't like the color of my neighbors house. How far does it go before they say I don't like seeing this or that on your property, remove it because it offends my vision.

I say to those people with sensitive tastes, look the other way and mind your own damn business!

I'd go with moving out of town. That seems the easiest way to avoid people. Probably not the most feasible idea...

Bit of a pain in the ***...and going to cost some money....create an LLC in the state of MT. Once the fees are paid for it the cost is only a registered agent fee, mine costs me $49 a year. Anything beyond 10 years old gets permanent plates. Have to have liability to register a vehicle but once it is registered just cancel the insurance. You will have a permanently "tagged" vehicle. It is only costing me $49 a year to have EVERYTHING registered. Car trailer, utility trailer, Exploder, my diesel, the bike and my 4 old junkers aka "someday projects". Kind of funny to know that a vehicle that has not ran since 04 is registered....

As much as it upset me when they attempted to make me get rid of my cars, I DO understand that there is a need to have some rules to keep things from getting out of control. I don't want to live next to someone that has garbage all over their yard. I don't want neighbors that are having loud parties all night long when I need to sleep. The problem I have is that often it is only the folks with vehicles that are singled out.

One of my neighbors has crap all over their place. Papers and cans are constantly blowing from their property onto mine. It seems that they've bought their kids every toy that Toys R Us ever sold and they've left them scattered across their lawn. Apparently it is not considered to be as big an issue as the 4 spotless musclecars I have parked neatly in a row.

Some people seem to be addicted to lawn ornaments. They can display anything they want and as much as they want. It doesn't matter if it reaches epidemic proportions or whether or not it is hideously distasteful. - Just so it is not a vehicle.

It really does seem to me that there are people out there that are anti-car. Unless you're willing to become a conformist that owns a vanilla SUV, generic sedan, or mini-van they get upset. I don't think that they're in the majority but they tend to be vocal and eager to see their view of how the world should be forced down the throats of others.

Most of my neighbors are actually very supportive of my hobby. From time to time they stop over just to visit and see how the different projects are progressing. But I do have one neighbor that works as a groundskeeper at the local courthouse. He seems to have influence with the members of law enforcement that he is in close contact every day. He is anti-car. And he has been known to use his influence to have a few of us in the neighborhood harassed.

My son was in the Army for 4 years. After he was out he would drive his '68 Chevelle over to my place to visit. The first 4 times he came, he was pulled over by the police on his way. There was never a legitimate reason. One time they told him he had a headlight out. - It wasn't. Another time they said he 'looked' like he was driving too fast. Another time it was because he still had Georgia plates on his car from when he had been stationed at Ft. Stewart.

Law enforcement is essential. But often the power they have is used to intimidate people.

Amen to that, seems we have the same trouble here. My brother in law was often pulled over for nothing. A few weeks ago, he was almost arrested for standing outside of a friends house. Someone stole a four wheeler from his buddy, the cops showed up and his buddy had went looking for the four wheeler. Brother in law was literally standing by his truck and they damn near had him cuffed and in the car before his buddy got back to inform them he was supposed to be there. Crazy world we live in. He's a good, honest, hard working kid. Just bought his first house and moved his GF and son in. It's ridiculous.

Hopefully the car issue here can get sorted out with little to no bull **** involved.

Blew outta work a little early and got to work getting it street legal. Threw on a pep boys exhaust fixed the lights, and got the slant running smooth. I decided to go for a cruise around the neighborhood and made it about 20 yards till I realized that I had zero brakes! Checked the reservoir and bone empty in the front. Woops. Also ran out of gas as I pulled in I forgot about running it almost dry! Hitting the dmv on Wednesday. Wish me luck

In Minnesota I have collector plates that cost $90 lifetime. I opted for personalized plates that ran an extra $90. They are registered for life. No more yearly fees. Gotta love it.

I only paid $25 for my collector plates, last time being 9 years ago. That sucks if they went up.

I moved to one of the best counties in this state for being a hot roddrer.
I wish everyone luck. There are organizations which help defend the rights of car enthusiasts. Look them up for your area. They are politically involved and can help with do and don't / your rights.

Simplest thing is to just get it legal. I own a rear lot, with acreage, and my home is not visible from the road. I had an insurance audit - had nothing to do with any govenmental deal - I had to get rid of some cars, organize, and put one on my trailer which is registered in order to comply. Compliance meant keeping mandatory homeowners insurance. BTW - I've got the same insurer for auto and home, have had them for years, and haven't had a claim for either policy ever. So this is a random deal. Sometimes you just need to suck it up and do what the man wants. In the long run it gave me a reason to ask a friend to move his car and forced me to part out a couple cars I needed to do anyway.

Here, to have everything registered costs me approximatley $2,604 per year....thats 2 x 6 cylinder sedans, 2 x 4 cylinder motorbikes ( 1 is single seat, the other 2 seats), and a 6'x4' box trailer.....thats it.
The cars are a 1993 model, 2001 model, bikes are an '87 and '99 models, and the trailer is 5 years old.

I don't understand how anyone who enjoys outdoor activities such as cars, trucks, boats, atvs etc could willingly move to an HOA-controlled neighborhood.

Sometimes, they DON'T: the HOA moves into the neighborhood!

Does that mean you can't have a gravel driveway?!
