HI guys,I have a problim,my grass is being taken over buy WEEDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS mostly creeping Charlie :violent1:,some 5 years back I had golf coarse grass nicest on the block.Today we are not aload any pesticides anymore, for reasons I do understand. Help what can i use to get ride of this problim is there anything that will work,I do keep my grass cut at 3'' .Bumb out.

ONLY way to get rid of this is with a LIQUID killer ... granuals do not work ... i know.. and my brother lives in Canada ... you need to make a trip to the states and get what you need

The only natural way I know of is natural selection. In other words, you have to find a grass that's heartier and stronger than the weeds and cultivate the crap out of it. We have Bermuda grass, which is pretty much a weed in itself. Once you get it thick enough, it will choke everything else out.

Sounds like you may need to feed your lawn and over seed it Snake
You may have lost allot of nitrogen in your soil in the past few years and
adding 13-13-13 and re-seeding and feeding your lawn (over seeding) will help choke out the weeds.
Feed then over seed your lawn and keep it watered till the new seed starts growth.
then keeping it mowed down to 3 1/2 inches regularly will help keep the weeds from seeding and spreading.
As you do this pick a spot and pull weeds and seed that area but over seeding and feeding your lawn is what golf courses do ... I learned allot from a greens keeper mix that you can spot treat aswell but over seeding and feeding is best to rid you of your weeds..there is a vinegar mix for spot areas that will kill weeds .

I have tried 1, 3 & 4 they work but you need to get on the new weeds right away. Now I have mostly moss (not by choice) but hey you don't need to mow it and it stays green most of the summer. lol

The 7 Deadly Homemade Weed Killers, guaranteed to help you eradicate the weeds you find in your garden.

1.Boiling Water – Yep, that’s right. Plain old H2O can be used as an extremely effective weed killer. As a matter of fact, boiling water is more effective than many of your store bought weed killers in wiping out unwanted vegetation. Easy-peasy to do. Put a kettle of tap water on the stove and heat till boiling, then pour on the weeds you wish to kill. You are effectively cooking the plant in the ground. Boiling water is a great way to clear out vegetation on a wholesale basis, like driveways and sidewalks. But be warned, boiling water is not selective. It will cook and instantly kill any plant that it comes in contact with and this includes underground roots of nearby plants.

2.Bleach – Not only is bleach a spot remover, it is a weed remover as well. Place some bleach in a spray bottle and spray on the weed you wish to remove. The bleach chemicals will evaporate or dissipate in about two days (or less but better safe than sorry), making the area safe for planting. Again, bleach will kill anything but if you do get some on a plant you want to keep, just wash the plant off.

3.Vinegar – Vinegar is a great organic homemade weed killer. Either white or cider vinegar will work. The acetic acid in the vinegar works to kill the leaves on the plant but not the root. Vinegar will kill back (kill the leaves but not the root) any plant but works best on young plants because they do not have enough energy stored in the roots to regrow their leaves. If vinegar is applied to more established weeds enough times, the plant will eventually deplete its stored energy reserves and die.

4.Salt – It was once a known war tactic to salt the fields of enemies. Salting the earth was also used as punishment for severe crimes in several countries throughout history. The reason is because salt will kill plants and will make the ground unsuitable for future plant growth. On a small scale, you can drop a small pinch of table salt at the base of the undesirable plants. It will kill the plant but will dilute down to harmless in the next few rainfalls. On a larger scale, you can cover your gravel driveway or your ex’s yard with a good amount of salt and nothing will grow there for months. (FYI, it is illegal to salt another person’s property. It’s called vandalism.)

5.Rubbing Alcohol – Rubbing alcohol is used around the house because it draws water out and helps to evaporate it quickly. Guess what? If you put it on a plant, it will do the same thing. You will be basically sucking the life blood out of the weed. Makes you want to run right out and try it, huh? But again, rubbing alcohol is non-selective. It will kill any vegetation it comes contact with.

6.Corn Meal – Corn meal doesn’t really kill weeds, it just stops the weed seeds from ever developing. Corn Gluten is a pre-emergent, which is a fancy way of saying that is it is a seed birth-control. Corn meal scattered around an area will keep any seed in that area from growing into a plant. This means a weed seed or a desirable seed. This method is a good option for areas that you plan on planting grown plants in.

7.Newspaper – If murdering your weeds with chemicals is not your style, you can always smother them. Laying down a layer of newspaper at least 4 sheets thick (the more the better) will go a long way towards killing the weeds underneath. The weeds that are already there will die from lack of sun and the weed seeds will not be able to sprout because they are not getting any sun to start with.

This must have been a copy / paste from an internet article.. :) Some of the information isn't quite accurate..

LMAO I thought of that.

Sad thing is the weeds will probably come back even thicker. Good luck in finding a solution.

When I lived in AZ I used a per-emergent, don't remember the brand name but it has Surflan in it. I called it agent orange as it leaves an orange tint to the sprayed areas. Have yet to see it up here in WA. I asked the Spokane County weed control folks about it, they said it is legal to use it. Will be ordering it on line if I forget to grab it on my next trip to AZ. If it is put down heavy enough it will last all year, or at least it did in the desert.

Yup C/P like I said I have tried the ones I mentioned, their ok I guess if you have a small yard and keep at it. I don't like yard work:violent1:, lately I just have been pouring my used up gun wash on the weeds in my driveway & it works awesome :thumleft:

if your going the vinegar route, find some horticultural vinegar. Much stronger than the normal vinegar. Still take the upper first, but should do the root with multiple app's.

Drive to the US. They will not stop you at the border as they are federals at the border. Pay your duty and go. It's an Ontario law. Jump to Port Huron or Detroit. I do it all the time. No Weeds, No Black Flies, no no-see-um's... ;)

Ortho weed be gone works real well.... I was overrun with weeds of all kinds.. I sprayed the whole lawn with a UTV sprayer it killed all the weeds and leaves the grass.. It does slow the growth for a few weeks but worked awesome...It is also called 2-4-D.. I don't no if it is available where you live.. Tractor Supply also sells there brand and it works good too...Bill:book:

Natures way ---- Borax. If you apply it in the right amount, household borax is slightly more toxic to creeping Charlie than to grass, so you can kill the weed but spare the lawn. It does have its limits: It's going to burn the grass if you apply it too heavily, and you can apply it only once a year for 2 years before you exceed the level that will harm grass. The proper mixture is 10 ounces of borax in 21/2 gallons of water for 1,000 square feet of infested lawn.

Seen this on another site I visit....always wondered if it were true...

Funny to hear you can't get any weed killer in Ontario now , here on the left coast where the tree huggers thrive and the leaf lickers abound we can still get the worst of them all -Round Up , if you still got troubles come August I'll transport some to Moparfest for ya eh !
