Hello! I'm new everyone! I'm a female student of literature with almost zero automobile knowledge in need of much help. I bought a 1971 Dodge Dart 2 years ago and it's been nothing but a money Grand Canyon. Rebuilt transmission TWICE. Rebuilt brakes. Then was smashed into and had to do a whole bunch of body work. At each step of the way I suspect - in retrospect, because I'm a trusting soul - I've been overcharged. So, I want to start learning and doing this stuff myself! I jut bought "Auto Repair for Dummies" and now can identify 50% of the gizmos under the hood. I do love the car and want to do right by her and pass her on to my progeny, maybe. V8, 312, 4 barrel, dual exhaust. Love xox

Like I said in your other post, welcome.

I would suggest you get a FSM, not Haynes, Chilton etc, but a real factory service manual.

I think you mean a 318, lol?

Well, Young lady.... You came to the right place. You will find an enormous amount of help and information here. This site is addictive, and the best Mopar site out there. I saw your question about the rear springs. And that is great advise given there as well. We do have a few young ladies on this site. Rainy Day Auto is very knowledgeable and is in Colorado.
Welcome to the Madness !!

Oops, my ignorance showing. Correction: 318. Though my area code is 312. That's probably what caused the mixup.

I just realized that's the body manual. No link so far for the service manual.

Thanks! And how do I do that exactly? Or, if I ask a mechanic to do that, could they simply?

If the kickdown-linkage isn't setup properly, the car will either upshift very quickly while taking off, or it will hang in gears longer than necessary.
The most common issue is some folks don't hook up the linkage at all because they think it's not needed. But on a Mopar transmission this linkage is very important because it controls the oil pressure inside the transmission.

Without the linkage, the oil pressure will be too low during acceleration and the transmisison will slip internally, making it wear out very quickly.

A guideline for a basic-adjustment the linkage is that when the carb/throttle is fully open, the kickdown-linkage should also be at it's most rearward position.
From that point the linkage can be adjusted a few turns loose or tighter to have the transmission upshift at the correct time.
It will also control when the transmission will downshift into a lower gear when the gaspedal is mashed.

Welcome to fabo. Nice to see another Illinois resident! Good luck with the car!
