Tore into the 72 Swinger engine in car the wife bought the other day and found 15 big bumps on the cam.
All except that last one :D

Try and see the top of that lifter.
It was opening the valve about 1/8 inch, and I have a feeling that kinda messes with the duration too. :D
It must have happened fairly quickly because from looking at the oil and travel marks it looks like it was traveling more than that recently.

Someone: "What's the duration on that cam you got in there?"

Me: "About 6 with a 80 thousandths lift. :D

The heads are coming off next to see what we see in there also, but this is as far as I got after my normal work today.

I'm going to need a cam (good used would be ok if anyone has one they want to part with)
Will do the timing chain and sprockets with new.
If the valves are ok but just need a touch up I can do that here.

I knew I was going to be doing a cam before too long, but it never in a million years would have occurred to me that I would be doing it on her Mopar instead of mine. (dammit) :D

Throw in a 3/4" race cam !!

Since it's going to be a daily driver basically stocker I'd like to find even a used 340 cam, or comparable.
We'll get new if we have to and I already have a brand new set of MP lifters here that were going to be for my car so we'll probably use those on hers now.

What do you consider 3/4 race? :D

Do you need cam only? I have one I'd sell cheap. It came out my 340. I'm not sure what it is though because I can't find any numbers to identify, but it looks to have fairly low hours on it. Pm me if interested.

That could happen maybe.
Were the lifters lobe numbered when removed?

Yeah and it's a good grind too.

They were in order, but just before I took that picture, I flipped my box up side down in the bag and mixed them up. I'll take a close look and see if any writing is on them.

I wouldn't expect it to be anything else if you recommend it.
Personally I don't know hardly squat about non stock cams.

Thank you.

It ain't THAT non stock. lol It's very mild. I think it would be better in a 318 than the 340 cam would.

To you. :D
I wouldn't know unless I read a bunch of oppinions and rolled the dice.
Thanks for the heads up on that.

I noticed the split duration and no clue what it does.

I mean I know what it does, but just not really what it changes as an advantage over one cam or another.

I know it's not really what you want, but I have a pretty used - but still intact - stock '68 318 cam, if it is of any use. Starting to get a wee bit of flash rust on it (dumped it in a virtual vat of oil immediately after), so you may need to polish it.

Just throwing it out there.

Thank you, I appreciate the offer and could end up getting back to you on it.

Nothing written on them.

Ok, well I have new lifters here from another kit but the cam in the kit I have is way to
specific for a stocker 318. (It's a flat track cam and I need a driver cam)
I'll keep you all in mind when the time comes.

Thank you.

I got a 360 4bbl cam you can have, looks 99% that of a 340 grind if not identical. Just shipping from So. Cal. If you can wait, Im driving the I-10 from Texas to CA on Nov 21, I could toss it out the window in your county...I actually have a few LA cams that are not doing anything at the moment and have no future plans.

There's a possibility.

Thank you.

I might could be there to catch it.
It'd cost me more for the gas than shipping though. :D (about 40 from here to I10 and back.
Any clue what shipping would be? (plus some for gas or whatever)

Looks like she's going to get my double roller timing set after all this time of holding it for my motor.:D

The things we sacrifice for them. :D

The 360 4 barrel cam IS the 69 and up 340 cam. That's a tad big for a stock 318......BUT you can easily overcome that by installing it down around 108* or even 106* intake center line. I would actually get behind that swap. Plus you caint beat free.

If it were mine I'd tear it down, thoroughly clean it, and check everything...wiped cam = lots of tiny metal particles floating through the engine.

That's what the oil filter's for. lol

Wow!
I appreciate all the input and willingness to help from you all.

I'm more used to making due with what I can get by on, and we both want it solid and reliable so I'm trying to make a decent balance between necessary costs and not.
We can afford the new set RRR linked ok if need be, so do you guys think it would be worth a try to put a used one in it?
