LA - Cast cranks ( Dont throw away )

-
There is a difference in cast crankshafts, though. The stronger ones are nodular iron. Standard cast iron crankshafts are ok, but they are not as strong as nodular iron. I always use the 351 Cleveland as an example. They never had a steel crankshaft option, but they were equipped with the nodular iron heavy duty crankshaft. Those engines routinely saw 9000 plus RPM on NASCAR and NHRA circuits, just as the 360 Mopar crankshafts. That's why I never thought it was a big deal which crankshaft was in a Mopar, because they are all good. But some people just throw them in the ditch because they ain't forged.

One of my engine machinists is a diehard Chevy guy... when asked about broken Mopar cranks he sez "When is the last time you saw a broken Mopar crank? NEVER!!!".....

I believe all the cast Mopar cranks are cast steel not cast iron. True Ford did use nodular iron cranks but those NASCAR cranks were from outfits like Moldex and Hank the Crank... billet steel. I ran Cleveland's in my dirt cars for several years... always used stock stuff because i was poor (and still am).

Nope. They were nodular iron. Either that or Forged steel. Mopar never offered the cast steel shafts from the factory. Mopar Performance did as an aftermarket piece. I think they were made by Eagle. The Cleveland cranks I am talking about were box stock. THey may have had some fancy machine work done like fillet radii and knife edging, but they were the stock pieces. You are correct that there were aftermarket pieces available, but I am not talking about those here.

I think the early cranks were Eagle but somewhere along the line I think Scat got the contract. Or maybe Eagle did the cast cranks and Scat the forged cranks.
I used to remember stuff like that. Not so much any more.

Me either. I know it was one or the other. Oh well. I remember where my balls are.
